    Q6600 G0
    GA-P31-DS3L
    4GB Kingston HyperX 800

K so my Q6600 arived today (hurrah!) but i think my mileage is fairly limited (boo)

ATM im running at 300x9 at 1.28v (2.7ghz) which is the best ive been able to do so far under prime95

i have tried 333x9 at 1.3v (3ghz), i found that i could boot windows but couldnt do prime95 on all four cores for even a minute

i also tried 375x8 but got a blue screen.

i'm running my ram at 750 on a 5:8 split at 1.8v do you think i should up the voltage?

my temps are hovering around 40 at idle and 70 at load, im running a freezer 7 pro so im obviously not keen on adding anymore heat.

any help is greatly appreciated, i'd like to reach 3.0ghz if possible

@3GHz turn your voltages up to 1.4, and DRAM voltages to 2.1V.

somethings not right, i have mine at 3ghz useing a arctic freezer pro with the voltage only at 1.2, its quite cold today and the cpu temp is idle at 28c, this is normally about 31c, im only guessing but i would remove the heatsink and reapply thermal past and check its seated corectly

3ghz should be doable with stock voltage, mine is even undervolted

already done this once as originally i was getting temps upwards of 80 under load at stock!

took the heatsink off, realised i'd used too much AS5 so i scraped some off and reseated (taking numerous opportunities to check the HS was on properly) and the temps came down to what they are now. do you think its possible i've now not got enough thermal paste on?

    I know 3GHz should easely be stock voltages I have mines at 3.4GHz @ 1.4V and it IDLE's at Core1 35C - Core2 35C - Core3 30C - Core4 28C and at full load it's Core1 69C - Core2 65C - Core3 59C - Core4 55C. Are you 100% sure you installed the heatsink correctly?

ok so i tried cpu vcore at 1.35 and ram at 2.1 and im now prime95 stable at 3.0ghz

temps are still worryingly high on load at 80 though (although it never tops this) also from what you've said my idle temps (now between 40 and 45) seem a little high.

ima try reseating this heatsink again and i'll come back to you (hate skt 775 mountings :(

so you just put that line on and let the heatsink squash it out? ive always used a credit card to smooth it out but i guess its worth a try

Ya its almost never the CPU voltages but the DRAM's.

yep thats all i did but make sure the line runs the right way between the cores as in the pic, there are instructions on the arctic silver web site

bingo! temps are now 30-35 at idle and 55-60 at load and my fan doesnt seem to spin up nearly as much

running prime 95 no probs as yet

i feel like a bit of an idiot noob tho :s
thing is i'd never dealt with quads before so i didnt really know what to expect temp wise (or how to apply thermal paste it would seem!)

thanks for great help all round, 3.5 next!

To much thermal paste will have a negitive effect, you only need a tiny amount. I normaly do similar to posted aboth, put a bit about the size of half a grain of rice in the center of the chip then bolt the waterblock down. The pressure speads the paste across the surface.

yup, my mistake was putting too much on, realising it and then taking too much off!

that stripe technique seems to be perfect for quads. although i still HATE the locking pins for skt775

IMO you need either a proper clasp system or bolts to get some decent pressure on the cpu.

i use cellotape to make a square box on the heatsink or CPU then add paste and smooth and remove with a credit card.

Generally on average the Q6600 can clock to 3GHz stock volts, i can hit 3.4GHz but i am one of the lucky few to get a good one, not not afford WC.

which involves taking out the mobo, putting on a backing plate, putting it all back in the case *yawn*

the AM2 locking system was great, two tabs that you could apply any amount of presure to and get a decent contact.
