Just a thread to maybe remind, or perhaps persuade a few people to go out and vote. I'm not trying to persuade you to vote for anyone other than the people YOU want to vote for, hell, even if you don't have an opinion, take part, spoil your ballot, just get out there and do something. (Aside from BNP voters - I'd rather you stayed indoors and read up on the history of your party and it's members before you decide to put an X on that paper) The struggle through history of people who wanted the vote, the effort and suffering just to put a little X on a small piece of paper and make a difference, that alone should get you out there today. Ah, I would but for some reason although I'm legally responsible for my actions, would have to pay tax and deemed responsible enough to drive I still have to wait another year before I can vote...
Mmm I've never quite understood how you can be old enough to be in control of a large metal box capable of travelling at high speed and killing large numbers of people, yet you aren't allowed to have a say in who gets to tell you that you're allowed to be in control of the aformentioned metal box... Am I right in thinking that in the euro elections we don't even get to vote for individuals but only for a party? For the first time in a long time I actually sat down and went through lots of the parties' policies and aims last night, including some of the new parties, and again I am struck by how none of the parties actually represent my views. Where is my, none of the above box?
You can always spoil your ballot, though that can be miss understood as the voter being too stupid to understand the paper, you'll remember the farce with the Hollyrood elections.
thats the problem, spoilt ballets get reported as idiots to thick to put a cross in a box, abstainers get labelled as betraying the memories of some ancestor or too lazy, protest votes to some small obnoxious party actually have the chance of getting the muppet elected with the low turn outs. Its annoying that you actually can't vote for a person, I have a distinct dislike for letting parties choose who should represent me. I even looked at the jury party as its made up of independents, now I can see that idea working in a first past the post vote, but in a proportional rep vote, it just makes no sense. You end up voting for a person who's policies you don't agree with whilst trying to get they third or forth on the list elected who actually shares your views.
Already voted by post, it really annoys me as a student how many of my friends complain about politics and the don't vote. Makes me want to hit em.
Yeah I have been voting for 4 years now (22) and I have always thought it would be a shame if you would not vote.
Draw a box and write "none of the above" and tick it? Least that shows a determined spoilt ballot not just stupidity, pity no one counts them that way.
Already voted this morning. Was surprised by the large number of parties standing. Does anyone else find it ironic that UKIP, a party that wants us to get out of Europe, is standing in European elections?
Yep, it is rather ironic, isn't it? If we pulled out of the EU, what jobs could they do? Some suggestions please.
I'm going down after work. Btw, BigD79 posted a great link to Vote Match in the Serious subforum if people are still undecided on who to vote for.
Except that they play a large part in stopping Britains inclusion in the 37 hour week, the CAP affecting us so much and so on. It will be a long time before we could complete remove ourselves from Europe, but to start with our MEPs have to vote against everything that the EU wants for us, hence, UKIP are in the European Parliament elections...! (you can see that I probably voted for UKIP...)
How is not wanting policies enforced on us by europe in any way racist? Many people seem to think that staying out of Europe is just for bigots and racists but there are plenty of legitamate concerns about the EU's policies.
I would rather vote for someone who has more than one actual policy. So UKIP, BNP, No-eu, etc etc are all out for me. I did vote today, for both the local and the europe votes i voted for parties with sensible policies that cover a wide range of things that effect me. Not just someone who can argue one point really well that won't actually benefit me anyway.
