Still getting all my bits together for my budget gaming build, being on budget i was wondering if i was to by a x2 3 ghz athlonII how would it compare to say phenomx2/x4 II in gaming??

Thanks, for your info will be paired with a 4870.

EDIT looking at 550 BE with MSI 770-c45 and 4gb of corsair ddr3 1333 memory

    Vs

Athlon II X4 630 with same board and memory combo

    Vs

550BE with MSI 77-C45 and 4gb of corsair ddr3 1333 memory but with also the pro 7 arctic cooler revision 2 and mx2 thermal paste for prety much same price as the athlon II combo.

Price difference the athlon combo costs 20 pound more.... what would you do?

It may be worth a note, if you get a 750/751 southbridge, sometime you can unlock a dual core.

    I got a AMD Phenom x2 555 for £60 of ebay.
put it in a M3A78-T (£45 today deal, scan).

20 seconds in the bios and, Bobs your uncle, a quad core B55 @ 3.9 GHz.
    not bad for £100.

Not all wil unlock and overclock like mine, but with carefull selection of components you can increase the odds of a £100 FREE upgrade....

I'd go with the 550BE and see about unlocking some cores, even if you can't manage 2 cores a triple core, overclocked to say 3.8Ghz would be better than the quad core for gaming.

Although you can overclock the X4 630, going past around 3.2Ghz will give no noticable benifits as the lack of L3 cache means instructions cant be fed into the processor any faster than this where as with the 550BE with it's L3 cache, will see much bigger imporvements through overclockng.

550 BE is a great investment, unlocking is easy is your MoBo supports it, just one click. As for OC is is a vary stable Chip and OCs nicely.

I support 550BE, at least much better than the 7750, estimated that it release 4 core first.

The x2 555 is better due to c3 stepping!
