I want to total mod my pc and all the components, so far I have a clear case for my HDD, a LCD screen with my logo on it and shows temperature, cpu usage, HDD space left (and anything else), add a LCD screen onto keyboard, mod the mouse by adding LEDs and a clear bit, stealth the dvd-rw drive, add a fan controller. what else can I do? please note, I am a a complete beginner but I am willing to try anything, so please don't make it too hard but i don't mind hard. many thanks in advance
clear case for my HDD (windowed HDD) - as a beginner dont even bother (this is of course if you would like the harddrive to even spin up again - let alone with the data intact , ) a LCD screen with my logo on it and shows temperature, cpu usage, HDD space left (and anything else) - nice and easy add a LCD screen onto keyboard - the hardest one you got on the list mod the mouse by adding LEDs and a clear bit - easy stealth the dvd-rw drive - easy add a fan controller - not even a mod i would suggest adding blowholes maby a full case window spray your case modulate ur psu
any other mods? I am going to buy a cheap HDD and try out the mod first of all because it looks soo sweet
just a bit of info - the smaller the hdd the more likly it is to work, so find a old drive and try it out on that, if you buy a new one you will be wasting your money.
look, out of everyone who has attempted it over the years, NO one (as far as i am aware) has managed to keep data intact for any large amount of time. the harddrives with the lower number or platers and a lower capacity have the highest chance of survival however. tbh unless you have a total clean room, your chances of getting the hdd windowd and it still being in a working condition for any long period of time after are approx nil. reason being that the heads float a extreamly small distance above the platters, if they hit a peice of dust it will cause a physical crash, where the heads hit the platers and the data is ruined. there is also moisure to contend with and all sorts of other air born contaminants that will ruin the drive. there are ways to increase your chances (i can list them if u want), but even then the chances of the drive working are slim.
ok use a low capacity/density hardrive - the lower the better, when i say low i mean no more then a couple of gigs. this is because of the lower number or platers, read write heads, they also dont have such fine tolerances. i would suggest a 1 platter drive, (500mb ish) you need to keep the drive out of its container for the shortest time possible, the easyest way to do this is to get 2 identical drives, open one, make the window in it, then just swap that lid with the other one. or you can seal the drive in a airtight container. the window must have a airtight seal. you need totaly clean the lid befor putting it on, rember 1 peice of dust and the hdd is dead. try to do it in the cleanst room in your house, prefrably one with no carpets in it. the main place people have done it is in the bathroom sealing themselfs in, and then using water to knock the dust particales out of the air (draw back is moisure problems) i think thats about it,and hopefully it should work but be prepared even after all it may be that you will only have something that looks pritty and doesnt actuly function.
People have managed to keep the HDDs working for a long time (Ghlargh on this board I think has done this with several drives) but there's really at least a 50/50 chance of ruining the hard drive, and you won't necessarily know straight away - they often work for a while and then suddenly crap out after a week or so.
so if i do it right then it will work for ages but if not then it wont work after a week or 2? What other mods are there? I was thinking of having an opening and closing door, and use an old CD drive to make the opening and closing mechanism (got the idea from doom 3 mod case). Also is it possible to make a clear CD drive case? And I have read lots of guides on how to make clear PSU cases but it only explains how to do the top not the sides. Anyone know any good modding website where I can buy modding supplies?
so if i do it right then it will work for ages but if not then it wont work after a week or 2?- if you do it "right" yes, but tbh its more luck then skill - because even if you follow the advice of everyone on the board there is still a fairly high chance it will die, like Jhonbus you have at least a 50/50 chance of ruining the drive no matter wat. What other mods are there?- there are loads of other mods it would be silly to try and list them all, have a look in the project logs for ideas. Also is it possible to make a clear CD drive case? - yes Anyone know any good modding website where I can buy modding supplies? yes - check out the sticky at the top of this page.
