Okay, but late for the call now...

I'll help you all I can mate, I ran mine on Virgin for years before moving house and going to ADSL. Funnily enough, I reinstalled it last weekend because I needed longer range "N" wireless than the BE ADSL router gave me.

tldr; I have mine up and running again.

    You can't put DD-WRT on a DIR-655 unfortunately.

No, plug it into your LAN then access it via your browser.

Right, let's go through this step by step...

    1. Next to the power cable in the back of the router is a reset button. You will need a thin screwdriver or pencil to hold it down until all the lights go on at once. This will reset the router to factory defaults.

    2. Power up the router and connect one of the LAN ports to your PC. Do not connect the WAN (Virgin) cable yet.

    3. Login to the router. Default username is Admin and the default password is blank (you'll set one shortly).

Once logged in, make a note of the hardware revision and firmware version which will be shown at the top of the web page. If you need a firmware upgrade, do this now before setting all the settings otherwise you will end up doing it all twice. To upgrade the firmware, click on the Tools menu across the top and select "Firmware" from the left hand menu. Unzip the new firmware to the hard drive of your PC then use the browse button on this router web page to select it and click on upload. Once done it wil prompt you to restart then login again.

    4. Click on the Setup menu across the top then select "Internet" from the left hand menu. Click on "Manual Internet Connection Setup". Select DHCP as your internet connection type, untick the "Advanced DNS Service". In the "Dynamic IP (DHCP) Internet Connection Type" section, just leave it at the defaults - you can manually add DNS servers here if you don't want to use Virgin's. Save the settings and restart if it prompts you.

    5. Click on the Setup menu across the top then select "Wireless Settings" from the left hand menu. Click on "Manual Wireless Network Setup". Enable wireless, name it (this is the SSID) and select "Mixed 802.11n and 802.11g" from the drop down menu. Leave "Enable Auto Channel Scan" ticked then make your wireless network visible or invisible, whichever you prefer. I would leave it visible until you get all other wireless devices connected to it.

Select WPA-Personal as the wireless security mode then select WPA2 as the WPA Mode then AES as the cipher type. At the bottom type in your own SSID key/password.

Save the settings and restart if prompted.

    6. Once logged back in again, click on the Setup menu across the top then select "Network Settings" from the left hand menu. This is where you setup the LAN side of the router and it should all be very simple. Yell if you don't understand this part.

    7. Click on the Advanced menu across the top then select "Firewall Settings" from the left hand menu. Make sure "Enable SPI" is checked.

    8. Click on the Advanced menu across the top then select "Advanced Network" from the left hand menu. Make sure "Enable UPnP" is checked and "Enable WAN Ping Respond" is unchecked.

    9. Click on the Tools menu across the top then select "Admin" from the left hand menu. This is where you set an admin password.

Important: In the "Administration" section at the bottom, make sure everything is unchecked and that "Remote Admin Inbound Filter" is set to "Deny All".

    10. Click on the Tools menu across the top then select "Time" from the left hand menu. This is where you set the time zone and time server to sync with. It should be fairly self explanatory but yell if it isn't.

    11. Once this is all done, plug in your WAN (Virgin) network cable. It will be non-responsive for a minute or so whilst it auto detects your upload bandwidth etc but then it should be all good to go.

The rest of the options in the router you can browse at your leisure, once you are up and running.

Let me know how you get on. If you need screen pics, yell and I will add them to this post.

But I will give it a go in the morning as I have a day off tomorrow. On leave from this coming weekend so want to get it up and running by then as I want to do refresh and load up my new hard drives

You have to hold down the rest button until they go solid (blue), then let it go. I got the colour wrong, sorry, I'll edit my earlier post.

Are you gaming via wireless or a cabled connection?

You could try turning off UPnP?

You could also try turning off the prioritisation - I am at work so I can't remember where exactly it is, I'll post later when I find it.
