A headphone amplifier, the most simple good one is possibly Chu Moy's. :thumb:

im betting his discman is a sony. every sony ive ever owned (including my minidisc player) have crappy volume and bass levels, unless the volume selector is analog, but its still rather crappy. ive borrowed a friends $20 wal mart cd player by durabrand and the volume and bass were double sony's volume and bass, and im considering getting one, seeing as how i now cant record minidiscs at the moment, and the volume is also too low. i am planning on making a pocket amp to boost the volume and bass, they sound like an awesome idea.

See if AVLS (auto volume limiting system) is on... it'll be a little switch on the bottom or under the CD most likely.

the avls switch is also commonly hidden in the battery compartment. and, of course, the avls switch circuit could be faulty (like alot of mine) and continually limits your volume without you being able to control it.

I have the discman that is on that site, and I always put it in some bag of my pants, so that amp is totally portable. ;)

Try getting some isolating earphones, like Shure e2c's (£45). Not only do they sound fantastic, but they isolate you from outside noise and pump the sound directly into your ear, so you don't need to run them as loud.

on my CD player you hold down the bass button to turn on AVLS, try that.
