Suppose I record some TV shows using my DVB card, and I want to convert them to divx to save space.

The card software makes the recording as a *.mpg file.

Is there any software that can convert this to divx ? Without too much mucking around ? I know there are some advanced options where I have to use multiple different programs and I can get the best quality etc ...

But for this I just need it converted to divx to save space ... Decent quality is enough, doesnt need to be the best.

All going well that should be an mpeg 4 stream (tis on my dvb card) i use mencoder (mplayer encoder) and a crontabed script to convert them over to xvid on my linux box. I think there is a windows port of mplayer, ill dig out my script when i get back to uni :]

edit: doh i meant mpeg2 :| and the audio should be mp3 already iirc, pretty sure dvb uses mp3 streams

he said that the output file from his recording software is *.mpg meaning that it'll be a MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 file.

I suggest you use virtualdub, virtualdubmod or nandub. Normaly they're used to add audio to video in a multi-stage rip but they work well for conversion too, nice and fast. just be sure to set it up so that video is in full proccesing mode + you'll probably want to compress audio(I find a 96KB/s CBR MP3 audio stream is normaly enough for me) so set it to full proccesing mode too

edit: head over to www.doom9.com to find 'em + plus guides on how to use them

loads of software out there to convert mpeg2 to xvid/divx. Try doom9.net for all your encoding needs - itll take some time for you to find the one that suits you, but i can recommend NOT to use Dr.Divx - its shite. Gordon Knott is meant to be good, or vdub is ****ing excellent but im not sure if it can handle mpeg2 streams? Been ages since ive used it and never with mpeg2.

I already tried doing this using VirtualDubMod and it just gives me some error when I try to open the file ....

I tried reinstalling and it still persisted.

I have just installed a trial version of Dr Divx and I do suspect it is rubbish like someone suggested in one of the above posts.

Showshifter has this feature but it is a pvr app and it costs money but I believe they do a 14 day trail.

I am going to reinstall the whole Gordion Knot Rip Pack .. i will post back here with the error.

    With Nandub
    Code:
MPEG Import Filter: Pack Synchronisation Error
VirtualDubMod seems to be working this time, I will give that a go and post back with what it turns up.

I seem to have got the Gordion Knot and assorted stuff it comes with working, trying my first encode right now ... almost done.

But there seem to be some additional complications in encoding the stuff from DVB recordings ... Both with the video and audio ...

Also the guides on doom9 are slightly outdated ... so some options seem to look different ...

But I'll see how the results of this encode turn out ....

    Success .... :D

Thanks for all your suggestions everyone ... :)

Now I need to get the recording process as streamlined as the encoding process.
