I noticed this link in another thread somewhere.

    www.oopic.com

Judging by the readup you could connect one of these beauties to yer serial port, via a Max232 transciever thing, send it temperatures from MBM shared memory, then have it control the fans from the readings! It has 40 i/o lines for various functions, so you could have simple switches controlled by it, or use the PWM output, or I'm sure you could use it to create some sort of virtual digital rheostat!

The best of all about it is that it can be programmed from the serial port, using visual basic!

Oh yeah, and it'll take a 4x4 keypad too for manual operation!

Myke's site has the ISDN and other useful info including samples of the book. Try there.

    I think I paid ~$35.

If you post a circut diagram and software, i'd probibly give it serious thought!

well im currently workingon the circuit diags n software hence the request for help with ADCs for temp sensors it should be a fairly simple circuit diag consisting of 8 transistors an adc and a couple of pics

EDIT: hmmm mebe 16 transistors not sure yet gonna think bout it bit more now

Eater - You any closer to posting a tutorial / pics of this?

And does your plan include fan monitoring?

firstly this thread was started to see what people wanted in a system what kinds of sensors, how many sensors etc so far the general feeling ive had is 8 temp sensors and 8 fan sensors would be plenty

atm im still gathering info hence the thread about adcs (used in temp sensors) but i think im nearly done on the gathering info stage so it will soon be time to start working on the software + circuit design
