Ok, the Lian Li tray is no use, and I can only find one other which Kustoms PCs say will be out of stock for a while. I was wondering if there are any guides to building you own motherboard tray or good examples possibly with a little bit about how they did it. I only need to make a Micro-ATX tray as that is just about the limit my case will probably hold and I was also wondering if there was anything about the spacing of the different holes on teh back panel.
Cut the tray down so if fits how you want it to inside the case. Then put your mother board on top of it and mark out where the screw holes are onto the mobo tray. Then drill the holes, and then place some spacers onto it. Place mobo on top of spacers and screw in place. However, make sure none of the spacers touch any of the components on the mobo otherwise you will short if out. I have some brass spacers somewhere, that will screw into the holes, then u screw the mobo screws into the spacers. I'm planning on using them for a PC that I'm in the process of building now.
http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=90412 All of the dimensions for the ATX standard tray are in millimeters. There are the stand-off holes, but you'll need to measure the spacings for the I/O cover hole and PCI slots yourself because I haven't made a template for that yet.
IIRC, C3 sells acrylic mobo trays pretty cheap. Dunno if acrylic will work for you, but it's from the company that made the origins of Orac3 so that's gotta count for something. Just checked, ten bucks. www.clearcomputercase.com
Thanks for the diagram Captain Slug. HMMM, that mobo tray on that site looks very good firehead, but I live in Britain and don't particularly want to import, is there anywhere in Britain?
Anybody got any stuff to share? As the only thing I still can find is Kustom PC. Anybody know maunfacturers that make the stuff as the Kustom PC might be able to get it as they say that they will try on their website.
Ok, so it is looking more likely that I will have to make it myself. I was in B&Q the other day and found a few sheets of Aluminium that I could buy. Does anybody have any measurements for making backpanel of the PC. Also, how do you make a mobo tray so that you can screw the stand off straight into it, ie. not just an ordinary hole? Finally, if I made my mobo tray and backplate seperately, how could I attach them together (with enough strength) without welding. Prehaps some sort of glue, I don't really know.
True, but anybody got exact measurements on a diagram? Would save me the effort What about the mobo tray drilling?
1) Tray drilling. Pick up some drill bits. Cobalt ones go thru aluminum very nicely. Use a center punch to mark your spots without having the drill tip slip around. 2)Depending on the aluminum thickness, you can drill and tap it. Personally I usuall drill all the way thru, and use longer machine screws (6-32), with nuts, well nuts with threaded inserts, and kurl nuts, to construct a standoff. 3) To mark the holes, I find it best to just lay the motherboard where you want it, and use a marker to mark the holes. Saves you from making measuring errors.
What about sticking the pieces together? >>Finally, if I made my mobo tray and backplate seperately, how could I attach them together (with enough strength) without welding. Prehaps some sort of glue, I don't really know.
Angle brackets and rivets should be fine. Or introduce a 90 degree bend on one or the other to form a corner seam, then rivet together.
