Would you guys be able to give me some advice please.. I've got the new fibre sky hub.. which as you can imagine is locked down to stop you getting to all the good settings. What I want to do is use OpenDNS, not sky's.. Now without having to buy a new fibre modem/router and do a few tricks to get at the password/username - I want to try to get on with theirs for a while. I've put the opendns settings into internet explorer - even tho the router is using the default sky settings. Soooo question is.. is it using those settings (ipconfig shows it is) - but is it?? Or is it still going through the sky dns to get to the opendns servers?? Is there a way I can trace the route??? Thankyou for your time.
Sky might be locking websites based on IP addresses, in which case it doesn't matter which DNS you use. Not sure if this is the case or not though. In Denmark a few years ago I had set my dns to opendns before they started blocking access to file sharing websites and everything just worked for me. Then one time I lost connection to their network, and nothing worked until I set the DNS to auto, and after that, no matter what dns I used, nothing worked. I'm sure there were ways around that but it wasn't a pressing matter at the time, and I didn't understand networking then like I do now. What I'm saying is, you might need to do more then just change DNS, and google should have that information.
you can trace the route you are using to get to certain websites in cmd prompt by typing tracert {website} ignore the brackets just type the website address ie tracert google.com
If you want to know if you're using the opendns servers goto the cmd prompt and type 'nslookup'. It should show you the address of the dns server being used for lookups. Sent from my Lumia 925 using Tapatalk
IDK if the following link is the same hub as the one you are using, but doesn't part of the admin page for the hub have a DDNS setting page ? http://screenshots.portforward.com/routers/BSkyB/Sky_Hub/Dynamic_DNS.htm
DynDNS is usually more for when you don't have a static IP and want to get back to your router from the outside world using a hostname. Useful if you are hosting behind a dynamic IP address. As Krazeh says, nslookup should show you what DNS server you are using for your lookups.
Thankyou guys for the help and advice.. I did a nslookup - came back: resolver1.opendns.com - address 208.67.222.222 Which I believe is the Opendns, so thats all good! Must be bypassing the routers DNS settings.
