Hey guys I want to update my rig but im not sure if m PSU if good enough. Currently my build is: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Coirsair H50 (watercooling) Foxconn BlackOps x48 G.Skill Ripjaw 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Dual Channel Sapphire Radeon HD 4890 Vapor-X (1Gb GDDR5) OCZ 600W Stealth XStream - Low Noise Im planning to upgrade to Q9500 and get extra 4gb of ram for win7 64bit. I also might get extra hard drive and do little overclocking. Is 600W enough or do I need more? Is my MB/CPU combo good or there is better combination?
X48 is a bit pointless, especially since you're running a single card - you'll be better off with P45 board. With the money saved, you could drop in a Q9550 or Q9650. The PSU certainly seems sufficient on paper - 4 12v rails with 18A each is enough, provided you balance load properly across them (I've seen tons of people make this mistake, hence I will never stop repeating this advice until single-rail PSUs become the norm). Ninja edit: I checked the prices, the Blackops is very competitively priced compared to P45 boards, at least on Newegg. Seems like good value for overclocking even if the extra 16x slot goes to waste. But you might still want to think of a better CPU. A decent Q9550 wil go up to 4GHz on air and that RAM will complement it very well. The Q6600 is just too old.
Core 2 Quad Q9550, S775, Yorkfield Core, 2.83GHz, 1333MHz, 12MB Cache, 8.5x Ratio, 95W http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Inte...S775-283-GHz-1333MHz-12MB-L2-Cache-85x-Retail I ment that one. What you mean by decent q9550?
I think you should only overclock your chip; it tends to overclock greatly. No need to throw money away; unless your PC does not double as a server The PSU is fine.
stone, i think you misunderstood, he already has the board personally, the cost to go from a q6600 to a q9xxx doesn't seem worth it to me unless you already have someone wanting to snatch up your old quad for a decent price. there will be very little performance improvement. the psu is fine and will be fine. i also wouldn't bother dropping money on more ram. unless you do heavy rendering, what's the point, 4gb is plenty. i'd suggest saving this money and springing for an i5 or i7 or w/e down the road, maybe 3-6months time. or, grab an ssd if the money is burning a hole in your pocket. i also would not bother trying to crossfire on that board/cpu. seen a few benchies that show a bottleneck with that setup at rez <= 1900x1200
Ooops. I misread. Should stay off forums past 2-3am. Yeah, I agree with trig and Kyocera - it's not worth the upgrade unless you have a buyer for the Q6600. Everything else (incl the PSU) seems to make for a pretty solid rig.
Will 650w enough if I buy extra apphire Radeon HD 4890 Vapor-X (1Gb GDDR5? Also, does it worth buying with incoming dx11? P.S I overclocked my q6600 to 3.0, 1333memory
