Hello well im looking for a after market cooler and am wondering do the 5850 and the 5870 have the same mounting holes?
If it is just a fansink for the gpu, I am pretty sure the mounting holes are standard. But if you are buying one with more or full coverage then it would depend. Since different manufacturers means different size cards and different layouts.
Given that most of the blocks I have seen for sale for the 5870 are also marketed as being suited for the 5850, I'd say that yes, the cooler from one will fit the other. Bitspower, Dangerden, Heatkiller, etc. - all say they fit either card. That said, grritsshawn said, it coulddepend on the card manufacturer. The waterblocks I've seen all specify that they fit the reference-design cards only, implying to me that some board partners might have monkeyed with mounting holes or components to some degree. It looks like if you have a reference-design of either type, the coolers will fit. -Tuthmose
i wanna fit this cooler on my 5850 http://www.frozencpu.com/products/1...ooler_NVIDIA_and_ATI_HD_5870_Compatible_.html
There's one mounting hole that's different. MY heatkiller GPU block, for example, needs one plastic washer to be moved when mounting on a 5850 and vice versa. That would probably be harder to implement on an air cooler, so I would say no. It's a pity though, because the PCBs on both cards are almost identical.
A quick search over this morning's coffee reveals mention of a minor fin modification which will allow the Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo Pro to fit the 5850. One of the reviews on the Arctic Cooling product page mentions that it will fit with a "slight modification". The link takes you to a review in German, though, and I don't have time to translate it at the moment (I'm running later than the rabbit in Alice in Wonderland). I'll see what else I can find for you at lunchtime. Long-story-short, though, it does look doable. . . . -Tuthmose
Good find Tuthmose (shouldn't that be Thutmose?) Here's a google translate of the page tuthmose found - http://translate.google.com/transla...om/Arctic_Cooling_Accelero_Twin_Turbo_Pro.htm Basically, the housing of the DVI connector comes in the way (because they're stacked and not side by side like the 5870). the mounting holes are identical. Therefore, the easiest fix is to cut off a few fins at the bottom left of the cooler, as shown below (pic from linked website): The new cooler is a whole lot better than the stock cooling too, going by the results on that site. Hope that helped!
