    Not really.

My life outside work comes first. (Im mostly only on here when I have nothing better to do at work)

I have a real girlfriend and have never owned a tshirt with computing related slogans on.

Don't go copying my thread now will you ;) . I'd like to call myself an unconventional geek, who waffles on about computers to people who don't understand a word of what I'm saying, but also has a life  ...sometimes

I would consider myself a geek, but not in the regular sense. I go out with mates every weekend and evenings, i have a GF and im not some kind of social hermet.
i spend plenty of time on here and other tech sites, but its mainly in my free time and free periods at school etc.
Id say my geekiness is more my knowledge than anything else, as i know more about computers/technology than anyone i know.

Wouldn't really consider myself a geek. Computers are just one of my interests.

That's half the project - determining what people what consider the difference to be between geek and nerd

    my opinions:
geek = computer savvy, could do your tech support, possibly no social life but by choice
nerd = trekkie! well, no social life but not by choice

Yeh i often worry if im a bit geeky because i spend alot of time talking to you guys, have a watercooled super pc and spend my collage lunch break nicking p2 cpus out the scrap metal skip! :D but hey everyones a geek at soemthing right???

IMO some people are even social geeks. To some poeple socialising is all they ever do and dont have any hobbies. If you ask me they are just as geeky as me just in a differant way!!

That said i definatly try to keep the computer geek side of me a bit quiet (expecially from the girls :naughty: ) as i find people judge you a bit at first but once i know people i find they are just as geeky as the rest of the world and it dosent matter.

i guess it really just comes down to what u personaly see a geek to be

I think Im a geek... but according to the dictionary Im not.

I see the term pertaining more to areas of interest than personality and social life. Im interested in computers, engineering and sciences- which to most people defines geekiness.

I do, however have a stunningly beautiful girlfriend of three years and have a totally normal social life. Im in college, I go out on weekends and party (and sometimes weekdays...) and have interests well outside those that would be considered "geeky". I own firearms and participate in tactical shooting competitions, to provide one example.

In my world, yea Im a geek and proud of it. But apparently I dont meet the criterion.

i would have classed myself as a "hidden geek" before i came to uni, but since then i havent been on here nearly as much at all, i am out every night, and love being with my friends :) by "hidden geek" what i mean is that i still went out with my friends and everything, just was kind-of "in the closet" about it lol... now, i havent even opened my pc's case once in uni, and have gotten interested in different things.. i come on here just cos its interesting to read now and i like the people :) also cos when i went to nottingham to meet everyone, they were all really nice ppl and also i have plenty of ammo to take the piss out of penski ;)

    confused?

i never was a trekkie - people in klingon makeup with big sharp things scare me. (but i loved playing with my friend's battleth)

i didnt become a geek untill i was about 25 - i spent the post highschool years killing brain cells and kicking a hackey sack around. then i got bored (i guess i was already bored, but too stoned to tell), and had a really good job - and bought a p2 class machine. a gateway. i shudder to think of the box i could build today with the $2711.96 i spent on that POS.

what did me in was when i bought the star wars racer game, and it barely chugged along and skipped a lot. so i went out and bought a new video card, and promptly voided my warranty.

and now, i have just finished an associate's in systems engeneering, have certs, and am looking for a real job. I am engaged to the woman i should have married 10 years ago, but let get away. we have custody of my nephew because my brother is a crack head. it's kind of like the end of trainspotting, but not quite so sarcastic.

being a geek is the best thing that ever happened to me.
