What a load of crap (not what he did) but there aren't any offical machines in a hospital that they can use? what year is this again?
Not ot put a damper on this but when you hear a story that there is no way to save a baby's life but a doctor is able to make a machine in his garage to do just that, make me shake my head. guess there isn't enough money in it...

Read the article - the baby was born significantly underweight (6 lbs), to the point where even the smallest dialysis machines they had were far too big.

Major props to the doctor - that's a seriously impressive thing to do.

I think what Chris was trying to say is if there's a need for a machine like this (and apparently there is, since the article mentions it's still being used for babies in similar circumstances), why didn't they have one already? Why did it get left to a doctor to cobble one together in his garage?

I don't even want to think about the possible legal liabilities, he probably had to break a dozen different kinds of laws to do this. :sigh: Such is the price we pay for living in a regulated society. On the plus side, you can't court martial a hero, which this guy most definitely is.

at first i thought the doctor made one there and then, bashed it together in an emergancy cough MacGyver style using some rubber hose, coffee filter, bean can and a pond pump!

this doc has just become very rich and a modder/god like designer/all people to aspire to be like him

+1 to this, no doubt he'd have been tarred and feathered by the press as a lunatic too.

I'm wondering, now, how long until the moneymen get their teeth into this device and start charging for it :/

Call me a cynic if you want, but you know it's going to happen eventually.
