Just got HL2 last week and bought the silver package so Ive also got CS:S and DoD.

Is there anyone else a beginner on these games? I had a few goes on CS:S yesterday and I'm looking forward to having a go on DoD. However I took a real beating yesterday on the different servers I played on.

Just wondered if there were a bunch of n00bs on here who would like to play so that its a bit more fun for eveyone, on an even footing.

    Let me know.

Get onto the bit cs server , join the irc channel #bit-tech.cs on quakenet and see who's arround for a game.

I don't play CSS, but DoD is kinda similar, and good fun. But y'all have another 12 hours before that gets unlocked.

It's not easy being a n00b - most people are just in the zone for killing, and don't like to stop and help. I'm usually happy to stop and have a chat, but only if everyone in the game agrees to stop the killing :D

Are you new to FPS or just these games? For example, if you're handy at stuff like Quake 3 / Unreal Tournament then you only really need to learn the new maps and the few quirks of the gameplay to become half decent at CSS / DoDS

I used to play Medal Of Honor quite a bit, but I havent been playing fps's for about 12 months.

Plus I don't get as much time as I used to, to play any game never mind online (married with children). So I'm wanting to play for fun, rather than those who take it a bit more seriously.

Geoff brought up an important point, learning the most popular maps will really help you when it comes to playing for real.

Open up CS:S and click create server, choose one of the popular maps :
    de_dust
    de_dust2
    cs_office
    de_aztec
    cs_assault

Put in some bots at easy level and play through the maps a few times, try to learn the maps so you always know where to go, where to run if in danger, and where to go for hossies and bombs.

Doing that will help a lot when it comes to playing on a server.

Jon - believe it or not mate, you're not alone in being in that predicament. Not being married with children I mean; the part about not having as much time as you used to.

Since you're a MOHAA man, you'll *definitely* like DoD mate - I'm just like you. The trouble with playing online games for "fun" is that someone usually has to lose, and losing ain't "fun" :(

Probably your best strategy (correct me if I'm wrong anyone) is to find a friendly clan to hook up with - random net servers are often full of annoying kids / cheats / "silly people" etc You want a server Where Everybody Knows Your Name :)

DoDS won't take long to learn - there's only 4 maps to start with. Yoda has given some good advice - I haven't even tried bots for DoDS. They're good, up to a point, but later you will learn even more advanced stuff from human players: someone will pwn you from a secret sniper point and once you figure it out, you too can use it to pwn other people :D

I dont mind getting shot (well I do, but I understand thats the point of the game) just that coming from medal of honor where I sometimes I could at least survive on a map, to CS:S where I was completely outgunned/outclassed and I was lucky if I lasted upto 30 seconds beyond the spawn point. Now that is'nt fun :(

OK, so I just got finished a 2 hour session of 10 vs 10. I would say you'd be fine with DoDS - die often, but I also kill often. Sure, you'll get snipered a few times, but the maps are quite easy to get a basic grasp on. Just don't plan on camping anywhere - unless you're hiding in a window (=sitting duck) any other spot can usually be shot at from somewhere else.

The key to success fortunately / unfortunately is TEAMWORK. It's best to stick with at least one other player, and preferably of a different class to yourself. Combine long & short range weapons between the two of you, and you'll fair *much* better.

Each player only gets 2 basic weapons, like a rifle & a pistol. All the long range weapons are useless up close, and vice versa. That's where The Buddy System comes along: combine an Assault dude with a Bazooka dude, and you can protect yourself up close, but also knock out any long range snipers / MG placements.

There's limited scope for individual superstardom

Question about this. When you make a server, how do you add bots? I haven't tried it myself, and I'm not at a comp with the game installed, but would like to try it later when I get home. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

ok guys, ive been looking at getting dod since it was released now. the only thing is, as ive mentioned before is ive never caught the CS bug. ive tried playing cs before and never rally got into it, probably due to the fact that there is some seriously good players on there and i get wasted alot. now i really want to give dod a blast but am a bit worried that it will be the same as cs for me.
i like moh, cod and the other ww2 games, is this as good as those? and is the team spirit in full swing? as in actually working together to get the job done on the map?
ANY experiences on playing it would be great
    :)

yeah, DoD is not like CS - the community is generally pretty good. The best thing to do is play DoD: Classic and see if you like the atmosphere before paying for DoD: Source. It's one of the best multiplayer games out there, IMHO.

DoD:S is a lot of fun, and now there are a number of custom community made maps, so a lot better than just playing the original 4.

I would say go for it.
