Does anyone have a Core Duo mini? I know Adnuo has a Core Solo mini, but I just really want a general idea of the speed of it.

I'm assuming on the processor front it'll be fantastic, but I'm not too sure about the hard drive performance, which is the main question here.

Graphics no longer matter to me (Which is why I didn't get a G4 Mini when I wanted a destop mac), so thats not a problem, as long as the GMA950 will drive the 2005FPW, which it should do with ease.

Just thinking about memory, 1gb should be enough shouldn't it? I'd ideally lik 2gb, but not from apple.

Second question then, seeing as the mini takes DDR2 SODIMM's (I think?) has anyone seen a place other than crucial (I've looked there so far) that stocks this type of ram?

Its a great little chip I'm on the lookout for a cheap single core one for my girlfriend and then I will pickup a cheap 2.0ghz core duo myself and do the upgrade.

Hard drives in laptop sizes are always the key if you can get the 7200rpm drive do.

1gb should be fine but 2gb is always better. Kingston do cheap but apple suitable ram.

    Thanks Gordy.

When you get one, let me know what the HDD performance is like.

I'd imagine it's about spot on with the Macbook Pros as far as CPU performance goes, as they both have Core Duos (and both have notebook hard drives as well). I haven't benchmarked my MBP, but it never seems to get really laggy or anything (in fact, it almost always feels smoother in use than any of my Windows machines). It never seems to grind away either... I suppose spotlight isn't always quite iTunes-fast, but it's certainly at least an order of magnitude faster than a windows search (even indexed, which is at least decent)

I believe that the GMA950 chips are suitable to drive even the 2405FPW/23"ACD, though can't handle the 30" monsters. I'm 99% sure it'll have no problems with the 20" displays. In fact, I'm fairly sure that's what they were using when I was at an Apple store.

I got a 2GB kit of ram from Newegg for $180 or so, worked a treat. Patriot brand. Crucial is pretty reliable for Apples, some brands tend to be hit-or-miss, kingston's pretty good from what I've read. You shouldn't need to buy it from Apple. I dunno what 2GB of DDR2-667 (or 533?) goes for over there, but you can probably get it for less than half of what Apple charges. Of course, cracking open a mini to upgrade it will be just a minor PITA, but oh well.

If you pick one up, let me know. I'm becoming increasingly tempted to do so... since I got my MBP I've pretty much fallen in love with OSX, and really wouldn't mind a proper desktop setup.

Yeah, the plan was to get 1gig installed when i buy it, then later on when I can afford it, get a 2gb kit and sell te 1gb kit on ebay.

If you sell something on ebay and say its 'Guarenteed to work in a mac', it'll sell for almost twice the price. And that goes for stuff that reall is guaranteed to work in a mac too :p

Just need to tell my powermac now :(

I've got a core duo mini and a 2 gig mbp - both with 2 gigs of ram and the mbp has a 7200 rpm disk.

Speed wise there's a definite difference between the 2, but I'm pretty sure its more down to the hard disk than the processor. Either way its less of a difference than upgrading from the ram from 512 to 2 gigs ...

Integrated video on the Core Duo Mini not lagging at all with Expose' effects and whatnot? That would be my only concern.

I just bought a macbook (regular) and really haven't noticed any lag whatsoever with 1 gig and the standard drive (5400 rpm I think) . Now I'm not picky, but I have been quite impressed with the speed of it all, and the graphics aren't holding anything back.
