ok super vague question CPU overclocking or GPU overclocking ? CPU overclocking can significantly boost your FPS in games. although it is very varied depending on the game. It depends how much work the game is asking the CPU to do. If its at a higher clock then it can complete the operation faster and start the next one. CPU overclocking can give very significant boost to just about all programs that require some calculations in one way other another. Photoshop can process effects or edits much quicker. Word however wouldnt really be effected as all modern CPUs can handle this extremely low level task. GPU overclocking will also boost your FPS in games although i find that it doesnt provide massive boosts but it can mean the difference between playable or not.
Agree with the above ^^^ Just thought id mention that overclocking if not done right can cause damage to your components Gaz
Don't scare the boy! You'd have to do something seriously bad to break anything in a way that can't be fixed my clearing the CMOS ("5v vCore? That sounds great!")
It depends on the game; some games do respond well to CPU overclocking - GTA IV, Flight Sim X are a couple, for instance. Graphics card overclocking can help, but again, it depends on the game, and of course, the graphics card that you've got.
lol, sorry, didn't mean it like that Just make sure that your fans are up to the job of keeping the components cool, and don't do one big jump (e.g 650MHz to 800MHz) as this will probably result in crashing your computer, just do small steps until your happy Gaz
+1 Agreed. From an ancient post on ye olde custom pc forum: If it ain't broke you ain't pushing it hard enough. As gaz says, good cooling is important if you want to keep things stable and from dying a death.
Would i need to overclock an i7 920 now or should i just stay at stock and wait till it starts to age since it's best out right now.
id overclock now as it will increase FPS in games. although the question is do you wanna overclock just to increase FPS in games ? if you do are you currently getting poor FPS in games ? what GPU do you have and what res do you game at ?
MSI GeForce GTX 275 Twin Frozr OC and i have asus 25.5 inch monitor 1920x1200 i maxed every game i played so in 1920x1200 full aaa (gta 4, fallout 3, l4d, the witcher) all run amazing only game is crysis i get around 31 fps in 1920x1200 and around 27 with aa on so if i go even to just 3.2ghz it would go up few fps.
If it were anyone else, I would be sure that this was a lame trolling attempt. I mean, he has almost as many started threads as he has posts.
I mean, it's cool that you're curious, but some of your questions border on ridiculous. It's all good though, doesn't bother me lol.
lol yeah pretty random.. I think he was asking if it's worth it- in short yep.. if done correctly it can save you quite a bit.. you won't feel like someone named sizzling ralph snuck up on your backside
go for the overclock then if you getting 30FPS in crysis more likely that the GPU is the bottleneck though. CPU overclocking probly would adds some FPS to that minimum though which will make it more comfortable what CPU cooler do you have ?
Should you overclock an i7 920, even if you don't need too ? It is one of the best processors you can get, but people just can't help themselves. Like saying to someone "whatever you do, don't touch that switch !"
well although its one of the fastest CPU ever made alot of games are still single threaded and 2.66ghz i7 920 is slightly worse in certain games than a higher end dualcore @ 3Ghz+. so overclocking a i7 920 is reasonable and not just to make ya wang bigger.
yeah crysis is gpu bottleneck galore.. that fenrir looks like the best deal if your looking for a good cpu cooler, bit-tech's reviews show that at least- you can also re-tim the graphics card and play with the cooling around that area to get higher clocks.. even 4 fps in crysis is a good deal- with the motion blur it doesn't need a full 60 fps to feel smooth get the minimums over 25 and it's pretty decent, you can tweak it out also.. it's been awhile but leaving everything on very high and turning post processing on high, shadows on high- it looked and ran great (there was some others I just can't remember off the top of my head- warhead was a bit more optimized than the original too)
