Im just seekign a bit of advice before I go any further with this. My Dad is self employed, and also trades under a different company name for one part of his business. He has been trading under this name for two weeks, he has now decided he wants the domain for this name (yes I told him to register it before but he didnt) Someone has now registered the domain purely to sell them on, they dont work in the area the domains are relevent to. All the page says is: Dad talked to a Solicitor he works with and she said that it was illegal to buy domains purely with the intention to sell them on at a profit. I thought I would check with you lot before anything happens. Any links or advice would be helpful.
i think it is illegal due to scamming most scammers get's the money BEFORE they get their domain and they just don't get it why don't you free this site: Freewebs.com, register and you can pay for that site to have your own url or domain...
Um, what you said has nothing to do with the situation I described Just someone trying to sell a domain for a profit...
Though it's wise to grab .net and .org as well. Unfortunately, there's little you can do unless he's got an established trademark (registered or otherwise) and the domain squatter purchased it after it became established. Otherwise, a domain is really like any other good - you can buy and sell them, and request as much as you want. Unfair? Sure. Douchey? Yes. Legal? As far as I'm aware.
Not illegal, Ive been through this god knows how many times, even trademark law does'nt hold up if the domain was held before the trademark request and can be a proven asset to the holder. What can you do about it?, Make them an offer, if they refuse wait a few months and re-offer.
And I'd suggest making an offer in such a way that you don't appear affiliated with the company that owns the domain (you can legally transfer it to the company later, if you want to consider it that way), that way you'll probably be able to pay less. It's all about your negotiating skills, and if they think it's of great value to you (ie, same as your company's name), they're going to demand more for it.
Near the bottom of http://www.nominet.org.uk/disputes/drs/abuse/ Was a page a google search brought up. Any use?
This happened to me once. It turned out to be some troll that registered it under one of those sites that lets you 'try before you buy'. Kinda like a week long trial period to see how much traffic you can drive with the domain name. The dude wanted $300US. Two weeks later, the domain was mysteriously available again. So my advice is to give it a short bit before biting. I do think, however, that what he did is legal. Sorry, and good luck to you.
