Hi, Just need a little bit of advice on PSU's!

I currently have the Corsair HX1000 running my rig in my sig... AS you can see it is a major overkill, However this is due to me buying it before the other components when i had plans of building a higher spec rig..

After losing my job... (Don't worry i have another one now :) ) i had to cut down on spec etc so am left with the decision.

Is it worth buying a smaller PSU (500-650W?) and then selling this one and maybe making £20 or so in the process?

Please bear in mind it is all going to be put it a Cooler Master Scout case, it's pretty tight fitting!!

If you think i should downgrade do you have any recommendations?

    Thanks a lot
    Liam

Keep it, you'll make a loss overall, and if you need it in the future you'll have to splash out even more. Plus, replacing a PSU is generally one of the more annoying things you can do in a PC.

I'd keep it, it's way overkill but selling/replacing it is quite a pain plus if you do upgrade later then you'll defiantly be covered

    I personally would downgrade.

650-800w is way more then enough for most rigs.

Seems like a waste to me. Take the £20 and reduce your carbon footprint!

How would it reduce your carbon footprint? Just because a computer has a 1KW PSU, doesn't mean it uses 1KW at all times, it uses however much the computer components are drawing. The efficiency is the only thing that varies between PSUs and that's the only thing that'll reduce power draw at the wall while keeping the same components.

Power supplies are most efficient when sitting at around 50% load so during heavy gaming sessions when your consuming say 350W for a modest rig, then a 700W PSU would be right on the money in terms of efficiency so downgrading the PSU would indeed save power (how much exactly is another matter).

However it's always handy to have a little extra in reserve for overclocking/upgrades etc and for that reason I probably wouldn't recommend downgrading for efficiency alone.

I wouldn't have recommended it for that build and clearly nor would anyone else here. However, the saving is going to be minimal in downgrading. I would keep it for it's 7yr warranty period ;)

Thanks for the advice guys, Guess i'll keep it. (Depending on space in the Cooler Master Scout when i get it as it does look very tight in there)

    Cheers

Erm just wanted to say to you guys that a PSU only pulls the amount it needs, and as that is quite an efficient power supply (about 85%) then downgrading will likely cost you in the long run as choosing a less efficient PSU will pull more power to power your rig [400W @85% = 460W vs 400W@80%= 480W)

Thanks for the information man! Luckily i don't have to pay my electricity bills but i shall take this into consideration.

    I think it's a 95% chance i'll keep it :)

    Cheers
