I am looking for a download manager. It has to be free and rid of spyware if possible. I want it to be able to stop and start downloads you see.

has anyone got any good suggestions?

    try Internet Download Manager
It's only a 60 day trial, but the prog works well, and should hold you over till you can find something totally free.

You could try DAP, or Download Accelerator Plus. I'm am not sure if it is free anymore, but it does have a little ad thing at the bottom. There is a way to remove it though, but that requires some registry hacking... I didn't read a guide how to do it, I did it myself. but that was back in 2001 on my 486 running win95a. So I dought I'd be able to redo that hack...

By far the best (IMHO) is GetRight. It will ask you if it can install Gator (bad), but if you choose No it will respect your decision. It has segmented downloading too, which can sometimes speed up your downloads
