and burned the iso and the start.exe wont run. it causes an error...so i go to reboot and try to boot the cd...nope its not bootable. did i get a bad copy. or am i doing something wrong..i only have one blank cdr left. and i dont think its worth using a dvdr
start.exe??? you sure you downloaded ubuntu? If you download an iso, you just burn it (using nero and the likes), and then you boot from that cd... It never failed me before, but there sure as hell is no start.exe (or any other .exe file) on a linux cd...
I've got about thirty Ubuntu CDs around (from their own ShipIt program)... PM me your mailing address and I'll send you one.
I never ever ever seen .exe files on Linux distro's, so I still find that... too windowsy But still; to install, just boot from the cd
Are you sure you burned the CD as an iso image, or did you just burn a copy of the downloaded files? I'm brand new to this Linux thing (going on 1 week now), and I made the same mistake the first time around. I downloaded Ubuntu and just burned the files to a CD. It never dawned on me that I didn't burn the CD as an iso image. -monkey
As mentioned above, it is VERY likely you either burned the wrong ISO or you don't have a real ubuntu ISO. I've only seen a couple linux distros that had auto-run capability in windows. I beleive they where live CDs. (oh and gentoo install)
Gentoo Install? hmm, I have the 2006.1 minimal install disk burned, and there's no autorun stuff on...
I'm pretty sure that the Ubuntu CD (Live CD at least) has a Windows autorun. I'll try to root it out... Edit - Yeah, it does (screenshot)
Not sure it runs in windows. That'd be kind a cool though. I've already got cygwin running on my PC at home. I've yet to stick it on a USB key so I can use stuff at work too. (rsync for backup up files, circumventing security polixy so I can log in to IRC, etc ) I had KDE running with it once. I should do that again. EDIT: Your av gives me the creeps, even though I somehow find it amusing.
i fixed it...i burned it on a cd i had laying on my floor for a week so it was pretty scratched up...i had no more cds so i burnt it on a dvd...i got it all running good.. except the part where you make partitions....i accidenty made unbuntu partition 100gig and xp 20gigs i did it backwards hahaha. i still have a few bugs to work out. other than that i like it....im trying to get my wireless set up and all i cant find an option for is wep. i usa WPA is there a way i can do it without doint wep
I don't know about ubuntu specifically, but in gentoo you need to emerge (~apt-get) a wpa supplicant... Maybe you should seek that out in your package manager...
In the case of all questions regarding Ubuntu, the Ubuntu Wiki is your friend. It has HOWTOs for most aspects of Ubuntu, including how to setup WPA supplicant
