There are some really good third party clients that you can use to admin Bittorrent via the internet. So you could ditch the graphics card.

If you really want a low power rig look at the nano ITX stuff it's about 65W total consumption a small client like uTorrent will work with minimal CPU.

What identikit means is that you don't need a graphics card as you could control the system from your main machine.

Yes but you don't need a graphics card to do so. You can have the PC somewhere else in the house entirely. You can use your main PC to tell it what to download and monitor its progress.

yeahhhhhh this what I will use .. I need the hardware to do that

lol nano ..its not Ipod . come on :D you mean mini-itx . it damm hard to find in this country .. I have shuttle case need one of them .. can't find it ..

the other thing you mean use uTorrent or Bittorrent programe ? the software ... or what ..

also the old computers take more power than the new ?

I was think will as rock and celeron and 512 ram this must be 85 $ or less

If the PII good and will not lag in downloading and use low power it will be nice

^^^ Like they say. Get yourself a small ITX board with an Epia processor. Most come passively cooled and run on 65W or so. Drop in some basic cheap RAM. Speed is not important.

Go for quiet and cool harddisks --again speed is not important here, capacity is. 2.5" laptop drives are not very capacious, but will run quieter and cooler than desktop PC drives.

If you connect this mini-PC to a network, you can talk to it with your main PC, tell it what to download and when. So it won't need its own graphic card, monitor or keyboard/mouse.

crap .. I called the stores they sell AMD's Athlon 64 3000+ processor with motherboard all in one with 102 $ and the 512 533 ram with 28 $ so this mean 130 $ so this crap solution ..

    also they have as-rock motherboard lg775 with 45 $ and celron D 3000 with 69 $ and ram 28 $ 142 $ crapper solution ...

they don't have mini atx motherboard and they don't have nano atx .. only micro and above ...

this mean :grr: I will use my PII ... this the cheapest solution now ..

    what now ..

Put all the bits you mentioned together into a computer, install windows or linux, install your favourite bit-torrent program (ie uTorrent) this will get you a PC capable of downloading for no expense and it will use a lot less power than your main PC.

To improve it i'd first add another 128Mb of RAM at least, better would be 512MB, make sure you get the right type of RAM for the motherboard you have. This is old RAM so you should be able to find it really cheap on Ebay.

The processor will not hold you back when it comes to downloading, just turn off all of Windows or Linux's extra features like desktop images, transparent things etc.

Then hook this PC to the network and you can use a remote desktop program or a remote management feature in your bit-torrent program to control the PC's downloading from you main PC when you want to.

For quietness just take of the old fans and replace with larger newer ones that run quietly.

Crappy machine (no keyboard/mouse/monitor and a couple of large hard disks) + Debian [or whichever distro you prefer] + TorrentFlux = winner.

Is this something that will actually happen? Your asking alot of questions across multiple threads, yet we are yet to see any fruits of the labour! As you've mentioned you have exams, this downloading pc, your PC mod (computers king) and a workstation, this seems alot of work for you! Maybe one thing at a time!

I have a PIII 450mhz, 256mb, 200W, quiet harddisk box that sits under my bed, running Windows Server 2003. I setup and control it using VNC from my main pc. Haven't used it for a while actually as most of my downloading needs are done from my main pc. But the odd occasion I need to download very large files then it does the job nicely :)

Who cares? The ideas are good. Even if Computerking does not realise them, they'll inspire others. And you don't want to know how many mods I started in my head and never realised... :p

I agree with Nexxo there, the amount of project threads that get started, then copy cat modders put there own spin on an idea.

Iv have got insperation to build a HD HTPC this week, a dowloading machine that is also a massive external HDD caddy and the whole machine is passive! That rips off three projects posted on this forum, but i can say 'Thats life!'

    Just have fun!

Comp king, downloaders dont need massive speed mate, i would take the advantage to passive cool the old PII 450 with a modern HSF, slap a MASSIVE zalman heatsink on, custom fitted, no fan just air flow in the case will do.

You could also buy a NAS-drive that can handle linux. It would consume next to none electricity and would be silent. Check this site for more info http://www.nslu2-linux.org/
