i was helping my girlfriend "mod" her bathroom yesterday, and i was using my dremel in some places. i was using it and it was working fine, i turned it off, and that was all she wrote. the thing wouldnt come back on. ive had it for about 3 years. anyone got any ideas as to what might have happened, something that i am overlooking as to why it may not work now? it didnt make any funny/weird noises. no noises out of the ordinary and it totally worked until i turned it off. i really need to get this going as it is my favorite tool and very useful....and i cant afford to buy another one right now. any words of wisdom or help will be very apreciated. ps- (i dont know if this is the right place, but i really didnt see any better place to put it)
That's too bad. It may be that its just old, but you should check these anyways: 1) Make sure its plugged in 2) Try plugging it into a different outlet 3) Make sure there aren't any cuts on the wires or any exposed wiring. I'm no expert, so that's pretty much all I can suggest Also, see if the manufacturer offers any support, they may be able to help you out. Check the warranty on that thing. You may be able to get a replacement.
well, ill have to wait till monday to call them and see whats up. on my "to do" list for monday morning. its really not in bad shape at all. i had a project that i used it pretty heavy on when i first got it and then ive used it sporadically since. id say it was in excelent condition if i were to sell it on ebay (not that i ever would)...until this. but, i took it apart, suspecting a little micro something or other in the variable speed switch (its a model 395 type 5), and upon putting it back together tried it... i flipped it on and for a split second it went whirrr. i got to messing around and found that by messing with the caps over the brushes i could make it go whirr every now and then. ive looked at the brushes, they are in good shape, the book says if they are less than 1/8 of an inch to replace them. mine are more like 1/4 inch. but i have suspicions about the springs that push the brushes in and make contact. i think they may be a little bent out of shape. anyways, ill make some calls and try a new brush kit and see if that works. i hope i get it going again and soon. i dont know how to live without it, it is that wonderful of a tool.
There's a little screw like thingy on both sides of the motor(round with a screwdriver slot) under that there's a small spring and you should have a piece of carbon like end to it(it's called a "brush" if you dont, you have to get another one just like it in a hardware store. If it's still there just clean it with alcohol and a Q-tip . Usually those things get dirty and they dont do their jobs after a while EDIT: sorry didn't read the whole post
yeah, its cool. i cleaned the brushes and they are still in good shape...i think there is a contact issue. the switch unit also includes the slots for the brushes, so if i can get the switch i think i may be set. its frustrating though, i can wiggle it and there is just a split second of whirr. and i really dont know what i did...meh, for once, i cant wait till monday.
Mine was acting up a while back. Thought the brushes might be bad, but when I checked it was fine. So I pulled on the spring and stretched it out a little replaced everything and that fixed it. Hope it helps, but if it's not going at all, that does sound like a conectivity problem.
I believe that Dremel offers a 5 year warranty. Since the tool is within that warranty, you should be able to get a free replacement....all you need to do is send it in...all you pay for is the shipping TO them. they send it back for no charge. If you lost the receipt, or if it was a gift, just include a note saying so. The website (www.dremel.com) says they have ways of checking when the tool was manufactured. But, of course, call first. It may be a simple problem that they can talk you through over the phone. Anyhow....I plan on sending my dremel back soon. It was a gift about a year ago, and I used it to cut my first window. For some reason, the first couple of speed settings do very little (if anything at all), and it has an odd shake at high speed that I swear wasn't there before (only time I used top speed was when cutting the window for my steel case). Anyhow, if you cant find a way to fix it, and it's less than 5 years old, Dremel will fix it for free...check out their website for information.
