Last August I was going to visit some friends in Portalnd, Oregon. I got a PSP to keep me occupied since I knew I'd need something. I bought the PSP with ATV Off Road Fury, Untold Legends and Twisted Metal and tt provided entertainment for a week, but I have not even touched it since I got back.

I shoulda got a DS - the backwards compatability would let me play my GB Advance games and I'd be having fun with Mario Kart and the other 5-6 games I find interesting.

I've been temped to sell the PSP, but I'm curious to know how it will interact with the PS3 and I'm definitely getting a PS3 (unless they put that 1 disk per system crap on it).

The PSP's ability to read memory cards would have been cool if I didn't already have Nintendo's Play-Yan for my advance (it lets you use memory sticks/cards to listen to or watch media on the Advance).

Well said. I think it's a shame people will have that view because a few of the games are 'colourful'. They're gonna be missing out entirely. We all know that the games aimed at kids who don't know better and the mainstream are trashy annual titles from the likes of EA, which are, unfortunately, far more abundant in the PSPs library.

Over priced? Possibly. Piece of crud? Well the sales figures speak volumes there I think.

Regarding the differences in game types over the two systems, I think they both offer something I'm interested in. PSP offers me the ability to play current gen quality games on a handheld, and thus infact generate a completely new gaming experience - don't underestimate the appeal and pleasure of playing a game already available on the PSP's bigger brother, on the toilet or the train.

My main issue with the DS has always been the games. Until quite recently, I've been really unimpressed with anything that's been offered on the thing. Some may disagree, but it's taken a fairly long time (considering we're now talking about a new generation of the Ds being released) for the games to mature from gimmicky novelty factor experiences to genuine head turning, crossover successes. Like it or not, Nintendo have seemingly (and willfully) cultivated an almost niche appeal that really puts off alot of people through their tireless flogging of tired brands and characters - where often solid gameplay is housed in the same old familiar apparel. For me, hardly any of the DS's appeal now lies with Nintendo first party games, but with the interesting releases mentioned further back in this thread that don't rely on some dubious connection with a fat bloke with a tash.

    [side note]
Teaching kids ICT from 11 right up to 18 and 19, and running a weekly gamers club after school, means I get to hear first hand the opinions and comments about current gaming straight from the intended consumers. I see dozens of kids with PSPs - I've seen one DS since it was released. Why? Well predictably they want to play GTA, or NFS, or FIFA. They couldn't care less about the groundbreaking gameplay or interesting gaming mechanics of some obscure 16bit Gameboy game. I've tried to run R-Type and Doom tournaments... are they interested? Nope. Stick on Halo 2 or MOH and they are. And I would say it's always been that way. When I was a kid, we couldn't give a toss about the groundbreaking and the revolutionary if it didn't 'look' the part or feature the sort of characters we wanted to see. We wanted games with Robocop in them, or Double Dragon clones, or the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles title. This generation has been brought up on the Matrix and the Fast and Furious, and the DS just doesn't fit that sort of desire.

Ridiculously well put post. Pretty much agree entirely.

It's also interesting to take into account the now almost standard import approach we have to games that I'm sure a lot of kids couldn't give a toss about. A lot of the games I'm desperate to play on the DS are not even available here, but that's not gonna put me off one bit. Including the DS Lite itself.

PS - Don't let the Mario connection put you off the RPG-goodness of Mario & Luigi ;)

What other game will you read such fantastic dialogue as "AREA RESTRICTED. ALL NOOB INTRUDERS 2 B HAXORED BY US L33T HAMM3R BROZ.!"

    I thank you.

I suppose though that today's new generation of gamers is no different to our own. Many will treat it quite casually, as just another form of entertainment (more so in fact these days) and there will likely be the hardcore that look overseas for new ideas too. No doubt they'll pick up EDGE one day and never look back...

Anyone preordered one yet? K? Any ideas on region locking? I have literally no clue about this on the Nintendo handhelds.

I doubt it will be region locked as the current ones are not. I'll be there on day one (I bet it rains).

When I look at the game charts for the UK, they always seem so boring. If you take a chart from 10 years ago, and compare it to the current one, the games will probably be the same type; FIFA, Tomb Raider, some crappy movie tie-in etc.

I'm reluctant to pre-order mine just yet because they might restrict me to just white if they announce an equally sexy black version or something. I've no doubts at all it'll be region free like the current model. Every Nintendo handheld ever has been a completely international product.

Depending on what you like really depends on what one to buy. Not wether one is better than the other.

I've got a PSP and find it great that i can use it as an MP3 Player, and also to save files so i can transport them about. Idont have an IPOD or a memory stick so saved me buying both. The games on the PSP seem more in depth and are harder to just pick up and play. DS games using the stylus seem to be the best ive played so far, its just the way your playing it thats so diffrerent. I tend to loose intrest in these games fairly quickly, but initialy think they are great.

One thing i did like about the DS is the game sharing thing, virtualy every multiplayer game seems to support this and it's great! why there isn't more PSP games like this i don't know? Remember the hassel with GB anoying!

    Just my $0.02

got a psp for christmas thought it would be fun but after playing it it's not that good and I wish I wouldn't have asked for it.
I just don't see the point as I don't travel enough to justify using it and since i'm at home I just use my computer or consoles for games as those are generally better fo gaming

I've got a PSP, but I rarely use it for anything other than homebrew stuff. As said above somewhere, a lot of the games seem to be crappy ports put out by EA. The one UMD game I own is Burnout, and that is about the only thing that interests me at the moment, even though it is still an EA port! The amount of glitches and bugs is unbelievable, considering it retails for £35. The quality of some of the homebrew stuff surpasses that of some commercial games, so i'd rather stick with that. My sister just got a DS and i've been playing MK on it, it's great, though I haven't managed an online game yet.

This aint gamefaqs mate, this is Bit-tech.
    Fanboy posts are not welcome!

DS is cheaper than the PSP, has a longer battery so provides entertainment for longer yet you reckon it's overpriced?
The rediulously high price is what kept me from buying a PSP. £179.99?
Wayyy to much for 5 year old technology.
Gamecubes were only £129.99 when they were released

I disagree, not only the PSP is much less than 5 years old, it was released less than a year ago in Europe, and that was AFTER the DS was released!! But I have owned a DS, but found that the games were a bit too childish and there wasn't much functionality of it compared to the PSP. It just sat on my shelf for a while, so I decided to get rid of it. My brother has a PSP and imo it is much better, it has more features, better gameplay and graphics, and reasonably priced compared to the DS - yes the PSP is more expensive, but it has more features and better graphics, no denying that. Whether gameplay is better or not is an opinion.

This isn't fanboyism, it's opionions! Just in case you are misinterpreting this post, I am not dispising of the the DS, but I am in preferation to the PSP due to the better graphics, gameplay and overall functionality of it.

What does it offer that is new?

Mp3 players were availble 5 years ago werent they?
Movie players were availble 5 years ago
PS2 was availble 5 years ago.

In all it's pretty much a shrunk down PS2, I wouldnt say thats a bad thing, but it's all availble already.

Ok, so Touchscreen was availble before and dual screen (Game & watch) but the way it's used in some games is truly genius (Another code) and some games wouldnt be possible on any other console (Meteos, Ouendan etc)

I would love to add PSP to my collection, but £180 for something I could of done 5 years ago, is a bit too much, £120 and I'm there :thumb:

Um... are you saying you'd rather have a fat ps2 with a large battery pack and a tv on you whilst travelling than a portable lightweight psp?

In fact, you would end up paying more for the fat ps2, battery and tv than a psp?

What wasn't available 5 years ago was a portable gaming rig with graphics and functuality as good as the psp! You can't compare an mp3 (for music) player to a psp (for games) :eyebrow:

I think the price of the memory needs to come down considerably for it to become feasible to use it as a personal media player, and even then you are currently still limited to 4GB (in firmware), which isn't a lot when using it for video. One thing which I found annoying is that unless you have FW 1.5 and use a homebrew media player, you can't have full resolution video playing from the memory stick. There's not a chance in hell i'm going to buy a film on UMD either - more expensive than a DVD and you can only use it on one device, sounds like a bargain. :D Anyway I still like it, but if I ever lost the sort of homebrew compatibility you get on 1.5 it would be gone in a shot.
