I got DSL a while back, and it has been working just fine, up til last friday night. My brother was using the family computer, and managed to get some spyware on it. I also noticed that the dsl speed seemed affected. Browsing was slower, and downloads would not start, or if they did, would download at rediculously slow speeds, like 500b/s. Well I figured it had something to do with the spyware, or a virus or something, and just went on to use my computer. Well I got on my computer, and the speed seems to have been affected on my end too. I have tried a lot since last friday to fix this. I have reformated and reinstalled XP Pro on the other computer 3 times, hoping it would remove any problems, because a scan with Norton, Spybot, and Adaware, came up with stuff, but it didnt fix it. Well after the format, it was doing the same thing. So I did this multiple times, while leaving my computer dissconnected from the router, figuring if it had been a virus that spread over the network, the computer would be safe from reinfection. After the third reformat, it is still acting up. I have scanned my computer with Norton, Spybot, Adaware, Stinger and F-Prot. I found some things, but they have been removed, and the problem persists. I have tried many different scenarios also. I have reset the router, and the dsl modem. I have tried connecting directly to the modem, bypassing the router compmletely. It still did it then. I updated the routers firmwear also, before I had tried bypassing it. I called my ISP, and they said they saw nothing wrong with our line, and they saw no dropped packets while I was doing a download that would not start at all. They said they had no idea what the prblem is, but they sent out a new modem anyway. Well I got that today, and it did not help at all. As of now, browsing feels extremely slow at points, and most downloads will not even start, or they will start, and they will slowly work their way up to about 26k, which was my normal download speed before, but then gradually fall down in speed. Also, my send/receive rate is off. Correct me if I am wrong, but the send rate should be significantly less then recieve, right? Well right now they stay about the same, the send usually being just a little bit less than the receive, but still to high than it should be. Like now, after a few minutes online, it is at 2,973/3,068. I am pretty sure the send is way too high. Anyway, I am sure this has something to do with the fact the connection seems shot. My computer is clean as far as I can tell, the other computer has been reformated 3 times, and it is still happening, and a new modem failed to fix it. Sorry if I have been unclear about anything, I'll try to remember if I have forgotten something. Does anyone have any ideas? I am seriously at the end of my rope here Forgot to mention, this is not wireless. Also, this may be of help. I did a trace route during a download of a video someone linked off the planetdoom forums, heres what came up... http://imagecorner.sorrowind.net/276/4.jpg I did the same thing when downloading off ATI's website, and got well up to 350ms at some points, much higher than it should be, and this is when a download is refusing to start, or downloading at rediculous speeds. Here is what was happening while I was downloading off fileplanet... http://imagecorner.sorrowind.net/276/5.jpg I did a trace route, and pinged fileplanet. Those timings seems a little on the high side. Also forgot to mention, I tried using NetLimiter to view what was using my bandwidth. For example, when I was updating FFXI, NetLimiter said it was downloading at about 8kb/s, and showed the up rate as being just .02kb/s. In the windows LAN status though, it showed the send rate to me much higher, yet no programs showed up in NetLimiter that appeared to be using all the bandwidth.
yeah!!! Same here, the dsl lines are have to many users for its size.. BB is real slow atm. Im getting 2mb in 10 days
Well I hope the line doesnt have too many users, DSL just became availible here, and for the first month we have had it, the speeds were just fine. If that was the problem, what are the chances I could even get my ISP to admit they are cramming too many people on a line so it cant even handle it? Eh... well tell me if I am wrong here. I dont think it has anything to do with the line being overrun with people, because my computer is still sending data like crazy, while I am not doing anything in which it should be sending so much. So I think the problem still has to do with that.
You don't have Kazaa (etc) running in the background do you? That'll kill your bandwidth in a second. No chance you could get the ISP to admit they overload their lines though, I'll tell you that. I know mine has the dumbest tech support around... the first person tells you the right thing then the next read the report that gets forwarded and lie to you about the problem to try and get you to hang up, but none of them have a clue anyways.
same here stinking isp upgraded the lines and said the speeds should be 3mbps/350kbps up but guess what at night its soooo laggy u cant play a game and i get fluctuations off 50kbps to 3mbps sigh damn money guzzlers....they get ur money and they still want more..
