what program would you use to run all this??? i hope not windows... you'd be getting locked out or in your house... the nightmare... what about apollo? there will be driver conflicts... and who the heck wants to let a computer control their lives... i mean are you so fooking lazy that you can't go shopping yourself... or get someone to do it for you... if a computer does everything for you, what do you do??? who the hell needs retinal scanners in their house??? have you ever heard the phraze "back to nature"?
yeah the really rich people have always been arrogant wasters... I mean the pc you're talking about costs like 50 times as much as my dads car... and it's a nice car too. the nerve of some people... i mean can you honestly say a 500 000£ bugatti is any more comfortable than say a Renault Scenic? i mean sure you have the extra luxuries, but the bottom line is: the bugatti costs way more, takes more gas, has less head/legroom, is harder to get in & out of because of the small doors, can't be driven off road worth a ____ and you don't wanna leave it anywhere... it even has a smaller range because of the small gas tank. I think what you're saying about ppl wanting the best stuff is rubbish... what's better about the bugatti than the Scenic? Aside from the speed and handling you're not gonna use, that is? I've seen a "crappy renault" drive 170KM/H just fine and that's already like 50k over the speed limit! and I doubt you need much better handling than that either... Let's see... the looks... however, what kind of loser cares about that that much anyway? a car is just a way of getting where you want. The world is too materialistic... You get judged by what kind of car you drive, or what kind of clothes you wear... With all due honesty... the only chicks you'll get by driving around in a bugatti are skanks... Any girl worth marrying doesn't give damn about what kind fo car you drive, as long as it ain't too incredibly crummy. Who cares whether you have 50 billion dollars or 2 million dollars? that doesn't prove anything. Coppers hate rich ppl. so if you drive 6 k over the speed limit you'll get ticketed. Then, people are also gonna be jealous of you, and hate you, and if they're having a really bad day, they might just decide "i think i'll just ram that silly sod, and say i was drunk... after all, things couldn't possibly get much worse for me anyway." "like he's got everything, and i've got nothing... He does nothing and i do everything" this whole thing is just making me sick... i mean the rich ppl have money to burn, while the rest of us have to work our asses off so we can be considered "losers" by the rich ppl. who haven't worked a day in their life... The poor ppl. get poorer and the rich ppl get richer... and it doesn't seem to be changing... once upon a time, i saw an ad for Renault. There's a picture that says "penis enlargement clinic" and there's a customers parking lot full of ferraris and lamborghinis, and then there's a doctors parking lot where there's a Renault Clio. Like i said.. the most expensive ain't always the best... correct me if i'm wrong... but the ppl who buy the expensive crap, are the ones who are insecure...and feel that they have something to prove. however, this is unquestionably a great way of making money. everyone wants to have the most expensive thing, but in the end, who's the greater fool?
Is it really sensible to stick important systems such as home security on the same computer as everything else? Here are a few scenarios for you: 1) User spills his coffee all over the computer, it fries, he has no security etc... 2) User installs a program or changes a setting and as usual, windows wants to reboot. That leaves a window of opportunity for criminals etc. Its not particularly likely that anyone will take advantage of this for obvious reasons, but for the security conscious this is still a concern. I would have thought it would make more sense to keep security etc on seperate systems with UPS etc, so there is no downtime.
Well when this Über system is complete, be sure to benchmark it and come back and show us all the big, shiny numbers. Cos at the end of the day, they're what really matter!
Erm, am I missing the point? When it comes to Home Cinema a £1500 custom built amplifier will knock the spots of any Home Computer as "Less is More" when it comes to sound. By introducing more processing and circuitry you amplify the interference and harshness of the sound, that’s why a decent Valve Amplifier can still outperform a non-Valve type. The fact is that a Super house owned by The Sultan of Brunei (probably the only one who could afford such an expensive "PC") will have more than one TV, VCR, fridge, cinema room or DVD player and no amount of multithreading can deal with so much data. Also, no matter how many HDDs you have, the limitations of current technology will not allow for such large Data streams (recording and playback in perhaps two or more rooms). So unless you have an R&D department to make Microsoft, Intel and AMD jealous you are still very much limited by current technology. Comparing cars to PCs (for status) will never really do, as someone has already said, because if you are that rich to not see how a single Kernel system can be unreliable you will certainly have an advisor that will. What happens when there is system downtime? All computers have system downtime... are you saying that when windows, Unix, Linux or whatever software you choose (As I doubt you will have the resources to develop your own) crashes you will be there to support it and reconfigure it at a moments notice? How do you expect to deal with user interaction? You cannot tell a rich bloke to not install software in case it infects the system with a Virus, he will tell you to get stuffed. It's his computer and install software he will. Recipe for disaster if his Home Security is reliant upon a working main PC. That is why at the heart of any decent Home Automation system is a smaller computer that acts as "control box" for the other computers within the system that can go down as all it does is monitor the other sub-systems. As an analogy, would you fund a single power plant to replace the whole electric production network in the UK and still trust it’s reliability? Coming back to sound systems and quality... The best Home Cinema audio systems will use the same speaker for all channels except for the Sub, and how loud they go is definitely not an indication of quality. Remember also that sound is subjective. Buying a big box with "The Best and Most Expensive Speakers in The World" will not cut the cheese in the audiophile world. What I like you might hate...that’s why you have to have a variety of different speakers to let the customer listen to. I have heard people swear that the harsh base rich sound created by CerwinVega! speakers is superior to Reference £2500 speakers simply because they preferred base to refinement. To be honest I can see little real world application for such a monster PC but as a concept it is interesting. I do wish you the best of luck in your plans and hope you manage to scale the near impossible hurdle of gaining venture capital in a market already plagued with start-up failures, as a project like this would not be cheap. Personally, I would not invest in such an idea (if I had the money of course) as its profit making backbone relies on too many variables and little is certain in the IT industry at the moment.
Please stop moaning! I mean who cares? Not all rich people are dicks, a lot of them work hard for their money.
Why? Does this forum forbid discussion? I think I would be the one to know. Stop trolling and in future make a constructive post or none at all.
it didn't work when i tried it this morning, and it doesn't work now... maybe there's something wrong with my connection... though all other sites work...
you might as well throw 265£ in the garbage every day... EDIT: a rich guy and a poor guy were talking... The poor guy says: "what did you get your wife for christmas?" so the rich guy says:"i got her a necklace and a mercedes... that way, if she don't like the necklace, she can always return it in the mercedes and still be happy." "Why? what did you get your wife?" so the poor guy says:"i got her a pair of slippers, and a *****... that way if she don't like the slippers, she can always go ____ herself!" ...got that off "Sopranos" a half a year ago... it's still funny!LOL! I love that show...
well research? xeons lol.. i saw over ayear ago cpu's that were 2 gig @ 8mb cache sizes made by ibm.. so god know what they are up to now.. and tell my why you would want a intell system anyway??? i doubt a company like dreamworks uses such a pityfull machine as your trying to make up.. and lets face it, anyone with that much money will already have a full home automation system.. and as someone said.. have a computer control your house? you gotta be fkin kidding me lol locked out, power cuts hehe. my friend works for a big company in europe (they have installed all of the sultan of brunai's home automation systems) and believe me they are better than what your planning to build.. and a darn site lot more reliable too (this man has diamionds in his carpets fs). as for the comment "Mind you why would people buy a 160MPH car, when they can at most use 80MPH on the motorway? Because its cool to have the best" lol 160mph is no the best.. my car hit 160mph with 4 ppl in it and i owned it at 19 years old heh.. 200 mph is good.. at is the slowest thing a top 1000 richest person would own.. hifi wise.. rich people.. have full cedia approved contractors to install it into thier home (costing up to 1.5million pounds i think the record is so far). not some 2bob company from kent (my home town) to do it.
Actually, Deamworks used to use SGI/Irix but has recently been migrating to HP boxes running Linux. (Oh, and like I keep telling everyone the MAC has it's place, proven by the fact that they use em for PS!) The HP boxes run dual PIIIs, which still outperform some P4s in the relevant areas, but the future will hold another move to P4 (now the technology is maturing) and possibly Itaniums. The situation is similar with ILM, who are without doubt the daddies in the entertainment/fx industry. They moved to single P4 workstations, as SGI stopped trying to compete with x86 systems. A move which has seen them bounce back in the high powah, big money military arena, but not so in the entertainment sector. They haven't yet abandoned SGI though. Plus, Pixar, the undoubted kings of digital animation have also begun moving to linux, leaving one thing beyond doubt. The real king of FX and animation atm is Linux.
monti thats the funny thing about ur comment on how u say that companys dont use intel why do u think intel are so exspensive coz they have companys pixar, the australian short movies awards, toyata, chev, ford, all these companys ppl use the intel proc not many companys use amd for the simple fact " they dont have the speed in numbers" ( in other words a 1700 = 1467 p4 1.7=1.6/1.7 ) now do this walk up to sum ****** on the street and say hi would u rather a amd t-bred 2200xp or a p4 2.4ghz the guy on the street is gonna say intel coz thats prolly the only chip company he no's of or the current proc hes useing its a simple fact of "word of mouth" if something is said often enough it will becom bigger how many times have u been to a lan party that was good and u went back for the next 1 more ppl where there or if it was a crap lan party how many ppl werent there if pixar and other companys used amd then amd would be the more expsensive proc and intel would be todays amd these are the things that norms beleive bigger is better more exspensive is better in this case not the truth another example ricers :- guys who mod there car for no performance value in the beleif that cuttin ur springs will improove ur proformance and will be cheaper the ricer would do it not noing that the stocks are better stock not cut ill translate if a modder was told that amds runn better then pents and the only way to get power out of pent is to oc the balls out of it the modder would oc the pent and it would be cheaper to oc then buy a new pent but with amds u dont have to oc as much coz u could buy a brand new proc for way cheaper and same performance and or better then a pent now ill egt to my point if u had all the famous companys useing amds and they where sponsered by amd there procs would go up a whole heap ( word of mouth ) and pent would drop any way my 2c
Pixar and the like don't choose what CPU they use. They choose a vendor that can meet their needs at the right price. The fact that the likes of HP and other system vendors use Intel is the established relationship, and proven track record at getting the job done in certain fields. The market is changing, proven by the fact that some vendors are starting to come around to AMD and the likes of smaller, hardcore system builders like BOXX use only AMD SMP in the systems they provide. As AMD goes through more generations of SMP, the way will be paved for the big boys to come and play, too. At that point of course, we will be more likely to see a price war, as intel starts to lose high end maket share and has to become more aggressive in the consmer market, rather than a role reversal. Which means, of course, it's all good baby!!
