Well to be honest it's not really worth spend too much money on a AGP card, I think a 6800GS would serve you well. -Fr4nk
A 6800GS isn't as fast as the 7800GS but in the mid range (1280x1024) there is little difference between them and as the 7800GS isn't quick enough to provide a decent experience at 1600x1200 I would save your money and go for the 6800GS.
As ive ranted on before i shall say it again theres no use to spend £200 on a AGP card the best bet is to get a 6800/LE or GT from fleabay as that works well on modern games. I bought my 6800GT/ultra for £100 off these forums and its been amazing!...no use spending £200 on something which is outdated and crippled.
AGP options in speed order are 6600 (£75), 6600GT/6800LE (£90), 6800 (£110), 6800GS (£140), 6800GT (< £140 2nd hand) and 7800GS (£200). Each card in the sequence represents a nice little jump in performance so consider pricing and any limitations your current CPU may cause. ie An AthlonXP or P4 3.0ghz aren't really going to get the most out of the faster cards. You may not find 6800GS in AGP form but it fills the gap nicely between 6800 and 6800GT! The 6800LE & 6800 stand a good chance of significant tweaking gains via software (as there's commonly dormant pipes). The only one of those that's over-priced is the 7800GS and that's simply because it represents the high-end for AGP cards (as the GeForce7 is only very slightly enhanced over GeForce6).
But do they all support duel monitors? (dvi and svga)? Im still comfused over all the diff cards can they run quake 4/ut2k4, whats the ram/core specs. I posted this cus all the different cards are so confusing i just need a simple answer. I DON'T DO FLEABAY ! there are several different cards using the same core, which is better? Do i use Nvidea or ati cores?
Yes they all have dual outputs prettyy every single card dating back to the GeForce4 has Dual outputs (also i f you look on whatever retailer your going to buy from you'll noctice in the picture wether or the card has dual outputs). For the best preformance : cash ratio your best bet would be either a Nvidia Geforce 6 6800GS OR a ATi Raedon X800 GTO16 Also as for "I DON'T DO FLEABAY !" I think austin was impling the "For sale & wanted forum"...
What resolution are you playing these games at? If it's only 1024x768, almost any modern card will run those with high settings very smoothly - I'd recommend a PowerColour X800GTO16 for that money.
Sorry for acting a prat/noob but i havent brought a graphics card since the vodoo 3 3000. 1024X768 is fine (currently running1280X1024@32bit to see if i can) (time for more noobish behavour) Is this one ok ? http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=317265 or this one? http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=313321
Why dont we rephrase? We dont even know what AJB2K3 DOES with his computer . AJB2K3, what will you be doing with this machine?
Pritty much what people have guessed however i want the following setup Onboard vga - ps1 monitor graphics card - duel 19" monitor for graphics/webdesign, single for gaming.
Well, I suggest, that this will not be possible. Normally you have to choose in the BIOS if you are going with the onboard-gfx or the AGP-/PCIe-Slot. I also suggest, that you are going for an ATi-solution, when you are looking for good 2D-Quality (graphics/design). So the X800GTO would be the best choice.
