Well if it is as good as the last game that took ten years to develop it should be good, remember TF2 took 10 years.

From the comments around the video, they've been working on this version of the game since 2004 when they scrapped the previous one and started again (As tends to be the case with any game thats been a very long time in development). So a 2008 release would have given them 3-4 years development time, which would be a good bit more than the average what 2 these days ?

As far as I know, 3D Realms is not a particularly big dev house.

They're pretty big in the biz - Prey, Duke Nukem and so on. They haven't released a big hitter in a while though. They were formed by a load of ex-id people back in the day and the team suffers the same problems - all tech and trouser, not enough tales and testicles.

Well at least 3DRealms now have some world records in Guines:
The longest developing of a game ever.
The longest wait for a game ever.
    The most extended releasedate ever.
    The longest waiting fanbase ever.

And in the end it would probably suck anyway...

I just watched the Duke Nukem Forever E3 1998 trailer. The game looked pretty good back then and has a number of cool technical 'accomplishments', such as real-time lens flare from the Sun and lamps as well as what looks like a very primitive gravity engine.

If you look at the brief history over at shacknews, you'll see that TF2 was announced after DNF. I am wondering what they will do with the fact that HL and the likes raised the bar by a good step for FPS. Try to modernize Duke or go for a retro thing (it just seems really corny to have a arch nemesis called Dr. Proton). Also what would the gamers want. (I was in 4th grade when they announced DNF, I didn't really get the whole DN thing, apart from the fact that I liked the game).

Splinter Cell Double Agent also runs on a modified version of UE 2.5, so running on an old engine doesn't mean anything (of course it is the question whether 3drealms will modify UE 2 that much.)
In many cases it isn't that much the engine that makes the graphics, but more the art direction. (UT 2k4 maybe old, but it's still a beautiful game, (tho be it perhaps since it's one of the few games I can run at max detail) while games such as Sims 2 don't have much of a technical deficit, yet look like something that came from a dog behind (in comparison)).

Your Sims 2 probably doesn't look that great since you might not have done much in the way of decor. Just a thought.:D

Hmm, doesn't say much at all really, but it doesn't even look like him for ****s sake! :(

10 years and they can't make Duke look like Duke, I'm unhappy.

gotta admit, i dont care no more about graphics. as long as they can make this game FUN and INNOVATIVE like they did the old duke 3D then that's all i care about really. this game really shouldnt be a tech-demo. leave that to crysis and UT3. i am kinda looking forward to this, if only to go back to my youth and blow up aliens in amusing ways.
