If I paid £400 for a PS3, and it failed, and they said that, I would go ape ****.

There's no need for a receipt for warranty claims typically, if the device's serial # is registered with the company.

Also, this serves the guy right for playing a PS3!

Seriously though, it is utterly ridiculous. With Sony's sales as they are, maybe they're just trying to save a few bucks here and there, haha!

I've just seen the released pics: http://consumerist.com/consumer/pol...usty-to-be-repaired-under-warranty-322858.php

Now, I thought the PS3 was always black, and that looks silver, am I right in thinking that?

But that it awfully dusty, and it doesn't look like there's any pictures of the insides so if it's just on the outside then it shouldn't be a problem, but if it goes inside then it must show that the system has had dust thrown inside it.

For something that was supposed to have been cleaned right before he shipped it, the damn PS3 is awful dirty. For probably the first time in my life, I'll side with Sony (plus I like to see Sony's fans pissed off :hehe:).

Oh, and Doug, it's black. You can see all of the smudges and the flash in the last picture. :p

Its a chrome trim on the PS3... and damn, that is dirty. I'd have to side with Sony. Guy needs to take better care of his crap.

ok... unless one of the technicians decided to throw some dust at it and cover it in sticky fingerprints for a laugh, that bloke cant seriously think that he has cleaned that properly? just look at the usb ports on it! filled! if thats what the ports look like, you can imagine what the internal heatsink/fan is looking like. thats just asking for overheating trouble....

WTF !!! Whats he been doing to it theres NO WAY that is normal wear and tear I wouldn't go as far as to say its a health hazard but its definitely been neglected I'd be interested in knowing EXACTLY how long he had on his warranty before he sent it back because I have a sneaking suspicion that he was after a new replacement just before it ran out.

Ryu, that's something I hadn't even considered. I guess I hadn't realized how long the consoles have been out, but with their standard 1-year warranty, a console purchased on release date goes out of warranty this Saturday.

Edit: That's for the United States. In Europe the warranties won't start going out until late March.

Now that is one dusty PS3!!! How would anyone let their console get like that after spending so much money. He has cearly not looked after that console.

I would be careful that you dont choke in the night if you sleep around his house. You will certanly need a shower. He must have been doing some wood work or something in the same room and kicked up alot of dust which shorted his ps3. I wonder how scratched his disc's are

The first time I looked, I thought no wonder they didn’t repair it, it looks like shite. But the longer I look at the pics, its doesn’t seem like it would take more than 2-3mins to clear all that off. i don’t know what it would be like inside..

After reading the article, and seeing the pictures, I have to agree with sony. If buddy doesn't keep his place clean to the point where it gets that dusty, then it is neglect on his part.
Maybe sony should buy him a vaccum to get the point across.

Yeah that's neglect, but they guy said he cleaned it before he sent it in, and I think anyone would be mad + stupid to send a console in for repair in that state.

So this might be the real story, or the guys at Sony have thown dust all over it. :)

I assume that you just made a joke which can not be detected due to the internet's inherent nature to block out sarcasim.
If not, what kind of person, goes and gathers dust, and then throws it on a ps3? It would be easier to fix the thing.

After seeing how bad some of my friends can be at cleaning, I am willing to bet that this is not the first case. One of my friends girlfriends found a bag of lettuce in his fridge. it was so old that it had actually turned into some kind of liquid.
Lots of messy people out there, and I know that not everyone is tech savy and doesn't understand that dust will block airflow and cause parts to overheat, but keeping your place clean so that there isn't constant dust in the air should be common sence.

In case any of you haven't found out yet, Reid Godshaw (the dusty PS3 owner).... is an actor, and he went on FOX NEWS.

    His IMDB Profile - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1463597/

Clip of him appearing on FOX News - http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/132329.html

Watching the clip, I really think he is after a new one after taking a look at at after a year of neglect. Plus he comes off as a total idiot, along with that other moron talking to the lady. I'm beginning to wonder if they(Reid, FOX) have any deal with M$ to further publicize this.

it seams to me that they are looking at the dust thats on the outside. what they need to think about is the dust that has built up inside the machine and clogged up the heatsinks and gotten into the other parts of it. with enough dust you may as well just shut off the fans because if they are blocked then they aren't going to be able to do anything.

Got to feel sorry for the guy though as dust is every where in the home. Even if he had of cleaned the outside, he really couldn't clean the inside if he didn't wanna void his warranty.

As the Fox news reporter said, this guy is sonys ideal customer having a range of sony branded electronics... nice one sony ^^
