i was shocked when i opened up my aunts old P2 (her main rig she got from evashem micros when P2 systems were like the best you could get i had never heard of AMD back then) the other day when 1 of the fans started making dodgy noises.

and there was no dust in there at all no dead bugs nada nothing.

this could be to do with the immacultly clean house or the fact that the pc is only used about 1ce a week for abotu1 hour. if that.

mine gets a cleanout whenever i can be bothered to open the case up or it is getting considerably louder.

Usually find all sorts, used to use a vacuum untill i realised it generates SO much static. I now use lens cleaners, brushes, etc.

Mine gets cleaned out about once every three months when my temps start to rise due to a good coating of dust on my radiator.

I suppose I should mention that I've got a Koolance PC2-601BW, and that I got it for noise reasons not overclocking, and because I was a total noob to watercooling at the time before people start muttering about it not being able to get 95% overclocks ;)

The only problem with it being that getting the radiator out and into a position where you can blow the dust off it is a PITA.

When I get some time and money, I've got some ideas on filtering but that'll have to wait.

For now, a can of compressed gas (I won't say air :) ) is your friend, just don't use it upside down or you may end up freezing something that objects to it...

Oh, and give it a quick squirt away from anything you like at the temp it's at, because even when kept upright, they tend to give a small blast of liquid at first. In my experience, anyway.

  4. Compressed air and a vaccum always has worked for me.

Slightly off topic but cleaning related...

For those grubby marks that never come off of your keys or mouse I use those little alcoholic pre injection wipes...

If the alcohol runs into the keyboard it will try in seconds and not damage it (assuming it's not being powered at the time...)

Oh they are great for removing stuck case badges and stuff, oh and any sticky gluey marks!!

Heh, I cleaned my main rig out the other day and used a vacuum cleaner to do so... :worried:
Did a good job and everything seems to be ok... [touch wood]

Then I spotted my SLK-800, there was about half a CM of dust covering the entire top of the heatsink. I cleaned it all off and now my temps are ~38c Idle ~42c load, ~10c less than they were before :D I'll have to clean my case out more often...

i just use a compressor (very cheep from b&q with a blow end attachment on the end) saves takeing off the heatsink . i also was amased at the amount of dust that came out of the pc and how much the temps droped....

    scott

p.s the compressor also comes in handy for mods too . as you can get a air powerd nibbler for cutting up panals ,and its very accurite :thumb:

im using aluminium mesh filters on my intake fans
they have kept out the dust and just need a quick brush off every once and a while (when they start to get furry :D )

dont know if they are the best but they look good keep my case squeaky clean :thumb:

Will the swifter type things not generate static when used? I thought that was how they worked?

Hoover for large amounts of dust
Air duster (compressed air) for smaller amounts.
I only ever clean out my pc when I'm taking it apart to change components (happens once every few months anyway). Dread to think what it'll be like when I next clean it - it was sitting on a brand new carpet for several days before the whole flat (==all new carpets) was hoovered!

Well first things first. Your generic tower cases are like vaccums for dust when they sit on carpet. Thats why you want to have them sitting on a piece of wood above the carpet. And even still, they'll attract dust.

Now on to cleaning, the easiest way is to get a compressor or can of compressed air and when the power supply unit is still plugged in but the computer powered off, use the compressed air to blow out all the junk and dust.

After that, disassemble your system and dust off each component, then reassemble.

Thats how I've done it, when I actually force myself to.

the only thing thats look dusty at all in my case is the inside of the aero7. the blades get fine dust caught on them, but the actual heatsink seems very clean! its been running for about half a year now :)

the only thing i clean is my window. i clean it inside and out every week  im so proud of my little AMD :baby:
