Which is the best combination of audio and video outputs for dvd? I have a dvd player which has scart, s-vid and a different one which i do not know the name of so which gives the best quality for video? Is optical the best quality for audio? Cheers for any responses
If you have RGB scart use that for video its better than composite and s-video. I'm not an audiophile but I believe optical is the best. To be truthful to me I can't hear the difference as I reckon im tone deaf, and on the picture quality on a £200 TV it ain't going to make much difference.
For audio, I think optical is pretty much a no-brainer. With Video-out, you're probably going to get the best possible output using Component video (aka RGB) coupled with a progressive scan signal. But from what I understand, that costs mucho £££, so if you had it you'd probably know about it. Hope that helps. /edit: Herbs beat me to it.
Jack, if your TV is capable of accepting an RGB signal, I'd use a fully wired scart lead, and set the player to output RGB through the scart. If your TV can't accept RGB, still use a scart lead but set the player to output S-Video instead. This is the next best thing to RGB. At all costs, avoid composite video connections (it looks like a phono connecter, and is usually yellow), as it is the work of the devil! The picture quality over composite is watchable, but very poor compared to the two methods above. As for audio, there are long drawn out arguments over coax vs optical all over the web. I personally use optical - I can't hear a difference between the two.
Ok thanks for your quick responses everyone but i am still a little confused My tv is just a little one atm (with rf and scart inputs ) although i may upgrade soon. Im not sure about the RGB connections - do they plug into the dvd player into 3 separate sockets and look like phono connectors? If so i need to get an RGB to scart lead (the scart for my tv) will this give good quality or do i need a tv with different connections to get the best quality? Thanks again for your replies and i hope someone can answer my questions!
I'm not sure about all RGB inputs, but the one on my TV is in the form of a SCART (clearly labelled "RGB <-"). By the sounds of it, I doubt your TV accepts RGB (I've never seen RGB inputs on a small TV) and that SCART socket might just be Euro AV (or whatever you call it).
if all uve got is scart and rf just use scart m8 :0 imho highest ranks r video: component s-video scart composite audio: coaxial (digital) optical (digital) Phono (is that RCA, i cant remember) for all these things the quality of the cabling is very important. Decent cable cost between 20 and 40 squid, but for a small telly it prob aint worth the hassle.
