I have the NEC ND-3540A and it's superb. Does all types of media (except maybe -RAM, not sure, but who uses that anyway?) at pretty good speeds. Cheap, too :)

I second NEC, I've the 3520, same spec AFAIK as the 3540 but a few months older. Quality.

See here for comments & reviews.

I've been using the Philips 1640, there are faster drives out but the write quality with 3.2 firmware is beautiful, there is also a region free firmware patch available (which works perfectly with DVD Genie [which is freeware]). I don't know how CD authoring compares to other drives but it seems to do an average job. I've had no DVD coasters since I installed the patch and it seems to run just fine with generic disks of many dye types. All the DVDs that it made play fine in standalone DVD players all in all a nice, cheap piece of kit.

have both a NEC 4550 and a Pioneer DVR-110 and i cant fault either of them.
The NEC "feels" better put together though

ripping dvds on the 4550 (and previous NEC drives as well, ive had the 3500/20/40 drives) is a bit slower because of the "quiet mode" which only spins DVD videos as 5x, but this can be removed with a firmware flash

Plextor Pioneer or Lite-on if you want budget.

Pioneer or Plextor. I would exclusively buy only those two, the former because they are cheaper.

i'd prefer NEC or Pioneer..but as ive seen with early pioneers they break down after some time and also when they say that the drive can do a speed they mean only after a firmware patching...thats why NEC is the better choice.

    Me :D

I've got a Panasonic DVD recorder that uses DVD-RAM and having a DVD drive in my PC that reads RAM is very useful.

    DVD-RAM

Pioneer is my fave. I've had a fair few. None have died, they just get passed on to other people.

The only one I ever had that I didn't like was a 109 - for some reason it couldn't write anything that my xbox could read :(

It's a re-badged Benq, runaway winning brand in the CDR-Freaks poll. I'm surprised nobody else mentioned them, maybe harder to find.

The 106s? Those were fab, lovely slot loading mech but didnt read all disks. Not like my 120s which has a harsher slot loading mech but reads everything. I have a A07 too, in black to complete my Pioneer obsession.

    my 104 is black
i think its the 120s actually, it was my second slot loading pioneer
the first one got wet in a little w/c accident :p

great drive tho, usually find that if a disc wont work in a different drive it'll work in the slot-loader :D
