Ok, so I am REALLY getting frustrated. I am on my 3rd drive in less than 2 years! I could understand if I did a lot of burning or movie watching, but I do practically none of the above. It is there to install games/apps. All three of them have just up and stopped working without any notice. I had a Lite-On, Samsung, and just recently a LG. This one shows up in the BIOS, it opens when I hit the button. But it doesn't show up in 'My Computer' and it doesn't appear to read.
The model of the LG is: LG GH22NS30

    Device Manager shows this:

Double click on the first one it shows this:

I've checked the connections, and I've tried different SATA ports. No Fix.

    Any suggestions?

recently had this problem at work there is a microsoft KB article about it.

all you need to do is delete a registry entry, restart and they seem to come good.
not sure why it happens or how but it does apparently...

I'll take a look at that, thanks. So that means I may have 2 drives in working order...... My brain contemplates how to mod them.

perhaps a bad overclock is corrupting your windows install.

maybe turn off pc, fully disconnect any cd rom dvd rom drives.
bootup to desktop and run a simple registry fixer like in ccleaner.
go to control panel/device manager and right click then remove any prolem devices.
shutdown and clear cmos on motherboard and reset your bios settings to default.
shutdown and connect your dvd cd rom.
bootup to desktop and see if device manager shows your hardware.

perhaps your hardware needs firmware updates and proper drivers installed.

do you have any frequent bluescreens? They're important to write down.

+1, this usually fixes all CD/DVD drive related issues.

oops  I forgot to update.

Yes, I got it all squared away. Used the reg edit and it fixed it. However, when I did that, for some reason my external drives 'letter' changed. (ie C: , K: ) not a huge deal, just had to update a coupe things so that they looked in the right place.
