Cant get my head round this one...

Just got myself a SATA Liteon DVD RW drive (SH-16A7S)

It works fine, windows detects it as..

But when putting DVDs into the drive I can read what data is on them such as the VOB files but it won't let me play the actual DVD

Nero info tool gives me this:

So I cant play legit DVDs.
If i right click the drive, there is no option to play the dvd
If I try open with windows media player or VLC it dosent detect it.

I didn't install windows using the drive but I shouldn't see this being a problem?

    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro2

What is region code is on the DVD? If the drive and disk are not the same region it will not play the movie. Changing the region of the DVD drive or buying Region 0 disks are the only legal solution.

Have you recently installed any older game disks form Ubisoft? Certain games can ruin the firmware of DVD drives when their installed but I cannot discuss any further without breaking the forum rules.

Region 2 is Europe. The reviews on Newegg for the drive are not good and it might be defective. It also have issues with software and a lack of updated firmware. Try a different DVD and see if the results are the same.

Was the DVD you were trying to play from Sony? All their new titles have problems playing back on your drive. Returning it and buying a more reliable brand might be the best solution if you don't want to deal with it any more and it won't play back more than just Sony DVDs.

I tired a number of dvds, backups, originals made by various companies.

Tested the drive on another computer (which uses the same model number as the one I have) Worked fine, no problems at all.

Ruled it down to a problem with the software/drivers as the cable must be fine if I can read the data on the disks and play the vob files manually.

are you sure you have the proper dvd codecs installed?
even though you may have windows media 11 or whatever, you still need the right codecs for dvd playback, something like power dvd or similar programs will provide you with the right software to get legitimate dvd playback.
most backup dvds and things like that have their encryption stripped out, so it appears as though its playing like a regular dvd (most of the time anyways)

Havent tried power dvd, but VLC should work as it has its own codecs built in?

Backups do exacley what the original copy does, not play.

This install of windows use to play dvds fine with the ide drive, and before I have swapped drives (both on ide though) it still worked fine.

Still cant get this working, on this pc (one with problem) when the drive is empty it says CD Drive

On the working computer with the same drive it says DVDRAM

Could it be a driver issue?

Reinstalling the chipset drivers and updating them to match your other motherboard might make the DVD drive work properly. They are the same model and nForce2 chipset so it shouldn't cause any damage. If the drive still won't play back DVDs then the firmware is defective.

Right, reinstalled the chipset drivers and sata drivers.
It now see's it as a DVDRAM drive and will allow me to start playing dvds (via right click or auto start etc)

But shortly after it will crash the program used (makes no difference what program I use) then around 10 seconds later the computer will crash.

Havent really tried to sort this problem, most likely something silly again

Check the IDE and SATA options in the BIOS of both computers. Enable SATA DMA transfers for the (1 / 2) or (2 / 4) SATA connectors on the motherboard depending on how the DVD drive is attached. Always make sure any SATA hard drives with the operating system are attached to the first "1" SATA connector. Disable OnChip IDE channels if no IDE devices are in use. Press Ctrl + F1 in the BIOS to access the advanced options.

If the option to enable DMA transfers for SATA connections are not available update the BIOS with the most recent version. Older Gigabyte motherboards set SATA drives as virtual IDE channels. Override the default settings and set each SATA drive on it's own channel.

Set the jumpers on the drive to 5:6 for full 150 mb/sec transfer rate and disable spread spectrum clocking (SSC) on the SATA drives in the BIOS.

If the drive still won't play back DVDs switching the DVD drives from each of your computers might be the best solution if you don't want to send the new drive back.

Only problem seems to be with legit dvds now, everything else works fine. can burn and play backups.

But legit (non scratched) region 2 etc etc just wont play.

Will check all the bios settings, but seeing as I can burn and play copies I cant see it making much of a difference myself

Right, clean install of windows, it still crashes windows.
Could this be the SATA drive on the motherboard?

Post any error data your getting in the Event Viewer relating to the crashes when DVDs are played. In the Control Panel look for Administrative Tools and the Event Viewer should resemble a notebook. Without this information the specific cause of the problem cannot be found.

    Right need this sorting now.

Had a look in the event log and nothing. Dont think it has time to write to the log before it crashes.

Just put the drive into another computer, which has the same motherboard as the computer I am having problems with.

    Plays legit dvds fine.

Only diffrence: IDE HDD and no other sata devices

And it uses a diffrent graphics card, although I cant see this making a diffrence?

Just a question, what happens if you put a legit dvd in, and fire up dvddecryptor?

Crashes the computer, you can still move the mouse and drag the current active windows around.

Thats about the limit, cant change application or anything.

    fine after a reset.

    :(
