I know this has been asked several million times, but what is a good program for ripping DVDs? I cant stand the low quality of compressed video and (as you can see in my sig) I have plenty of HDD space, so I'd like to store it as uncompressed video. I dont need all of the menus and junk, so I'd like to be able to rip just the main video. Occasionally, I may want to rip it with the menus and everything. I'd like to be able to rip any region. Preferably any region, becuause I have several DVDs from European friends + family that my DVD player cant play but I CBA to do anything with them. Also, I'd like it to be able to rip fast, but without any errors or loss of quality. I know uncompressed video will take up a huge amount of HDD space, but I don't exactly have a shortage of it. I currently have one empty 300 GB HDD and two empty 160 GB HDDS in my computer waiting, and one 250 GB that I can install (Its on one of my other computers, but it isnt being used).

ratDVD - looks impressive from what ive read, never tried it though. Otherwise DVDshrink if you want a DVD to DVD copy or AutoGK if you want xvid.

Unfortunately, DVD Decrypter has been removed from the internet after the author
received a "cease & desist" letter from a "Certain Company".

    full story here.

Be sure the DVDs you are ripping are not encrypted, and that they do not contain any form of copy protection.

    Circumventing copy protection is illegal.

As long as you own the DVD and it does not contain copy protection (those 5 free DVDs), I would reccomend DVD Decrypter (RIP) and DVDx to then re-encode it using your favorite codec. (XVID!!)

Works great for those high quality video cameras that write to DVDs for use in regular set-top players.

pm me your email, it's only about 900k

oh, dvdshrink is good too. I use DVD decrypter if I plan to AutoGK my movies down to Xvid AVIs, but use DVDShrink to either pull out the main movie 1:1 or shrink the whole disk down to 4.7GB for archiving. DVDD only does 1:1 as far as I know.

and oneseventeen, I think until our fair-use rights are revoked (don't worry, it won't take long, and in fifty years we won't have any rights at all for any aspect of life), it is legal to break the CSS in order to make a legitimate archival copy. read: only if you OWN the movie and the backup is so the original doesn't get destroyed. I could be wrong about that, but seeing as millions do it, I wouldn't worry about law enforcement raiding you for movies you own unless you're uploading torrent trackers.

Anyone know where some 'legal jargon' can be found to prove to me that I can make copies of stuff I own? (as it pertains to the US?)

I would love to have my DVD collection backed up just in case... I've lost tons of CDs to scratches, and would hate to loose my DVDs as well.

Dude, just go ahead. If you own it and dont distribute it i think it's one of those grey areas where noone will bother to say anything even in the extreme unlikely event you did get caught. Backing up your own collection for your own needs is something some of us do because we value our merchandise.

DVD decrypter for burning and ripping images... for compression do NOT use DVD Shrink. Get dvd rebuilder and use CCE compression. It's worth it!

Another vote for DVDshrink when it comes to ripping. I only use it to rip to my HDD, I haven't used it to burn.

Are you talking about cinecraft encoder? The ultra ultra expensive one that lets you do something stupid like 4 pass vbr and (was) the most expensive $/kb on the net?

Very true. Here is a great time to say 'theyve got bigger fish to fry.' Millions of Americans are making personal copies and rips of their dvds every day. Doesnt matter if its illegal, everyone just figures "its mine, I'll do what I want with it, as long as I dont give it to anyone else there shouldnt be a problem." This is basically true, as they are much more interested in those sharing ripped dvds, or actually selling physical bootlegs.

Pop your dvd in the drive and start copyin' brotha, the coast is clear and its a breezy day :cooldude:

If Cinecraft Encoder is the same as 'Cinemacraft' Encoder then yes. 3 or 4 vbr passes is what I normally do to encode, anything more then 7-8 is just a waste of time. And yes it does take a while to encode using the software (depends on your system to). I don't know what you mean about expensive though, as it is freeware iirc.

Quick check on video help and I came up with this
    http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=DVD_Rebuilder

DVD Shrink is fine for taking a DVD-9 and ripping it to a hard drive.. but if your trying to copy a DVD-9 down onto a DVD-5 (8 gigs down to 4.4gigs) then you'll be stunned at how much difference there is in the quality.

EDIT: While were on the subject of copying DVD's I thought i'd just share this little known fact with you... DVD's are much more sensitive then CDs. Cheap grade DVDs (anything under A) can, and probably WILL be unreadable/unusable in a couple of years (or even as little as 8 or 9 months!). Anyone thats trying to make back up copys that'll last for a while should go out and get grade A dvds. Anything less and your asking for trouble! Also watch out for 'to good to be true' deals on dvds, as they may be counterfit.
