Only use DVD Shrink for recompressing an 8.5GB movie (dual layer) to a 4.7GB (single layer) disk, or ripping 1:1 to the hard drive.

I agree with xuntitled - When I DVDShrink a movie down to a 4.7GB disk from 8.5GB, I notice about the same amount of quality degradation when I rip the main movie 1:1 off a disk (about 5 gigs typically) and then re-encode it with XviD down to 700-1000MB. Not a whole lot to be done about that, but in most case I'd suggest just dumping the menus and extras in favor of keeping the movie as close to 1:1 as possible if not right there. Of course there's the fairly noticible advantage of no layer transition too - I've found that several players I've had have a HELL of a hard time making that transition (a couple minutes of skipping versus about a two-second pause)
