No man bigger than Bill Gates would have the guts to make statements like this.

Asked what home entertainment would like in the future, Gates said that DVD technology would be "obsolete in 10 years at the latest. If you consider that nowadays we have to carry around film and music on little silver discs and stick them in the computer, it's ridiculous," Gates said in comments reproduced in German in the mass-circulation daily Bild.

"These things can scratch or simply get lost."

Who knows if he's right on this, I guess we can ask that question again in 10 years time.

Sounds to me like he's aiming for shared-data through the internet. That just so happens to fit nicely with subscription based payment, which is the next big way to increase profits.

I'll stick with my DVDs thank you. Regulated as they are, at least I don't have to pay monthly for them.

I coulda made that prediction bout DVDs. Not supprising really considering the wave of HD stuff and that billy boy wants WMP HD to be the next format for DVDs.

Uh, right. *I* could make that prediction! Let me clue you in on another prediction Billie Boy, I predict that within 10 years people will be getting sick of your predictions and wake up to the fact that all of your so-called "predictions" will eventually make you even richer because they are already in development by Microsoft themselves.

The thing is, Bill can say these things because he has the power to make them happen, or will have very soon.

If you think about it, how many products in the home are in some way associated with microsoft? And that number is only going to increase over the coming years so Bill Gates and microsoft can pretty much say what he wants, and gradually adjust the technology not to support them.

But at least there's a rival to intel: amd. Also the market is (arguably) quite evenly divided between intel and amd processors but with a company of microsoft's size, there aren't any corporations that can match the diverse line of products and sheer number of people who buy microsoft's products.

That's just another way he can track what you watch. So yep, that's the plan.

Doesn't surprise me honestly. Along with solid state hard drives made out of MRAM or at least some high capacity high speed FLASH memory, I'd bet our movies will be coming in something to the extent of a compact flash card.

I saw some thing where they were interviewing Gates about Windows Longhorn and he was talking about his operating system after longhorn. He said they were working on makeing people able to where it and just think of somehting and it would happen and your screen would be placed on a contact lens. Seems kind of freaky. Also, on the DVD obsolete arnt they already? Download your movies, plug your laptop into your TV or have a rackable computer. A regular usb flash drive can hold a gig, thats more than a CD, how long befor it can hold more than a DVD, 6 months?
