I've seen on alot of boxes where they have a graphics card with both agp and dvi outputs, they put an adapter on hte dvi output instead of using agp.

Is there some advantage to this?

I think what your refering to is the DVI to VGA Adapters. They come with cards with 1 or more DVI outputs. The point of the adaper is for people (like me) who still have CRT monitors or cheap LCDs can use them on that videocard. If they did not have the adapters, we would have to go out and buy them if needed.

Ok I think you might be getting a little confused here. AGP is the slot by which the card connects to your motherboard (unless you happen to own a new fangled PCI-E one). DVI is digitial connector for connecting TFT, LCD monitors. It's generally a lot better than using VGA (analog) which can also be used to connect CRT and TFTs. DVI now seems to becoming the mainstream (more and more cards are adding dual DVI ports)

    Hope that helps.

I think hes just tired looking at the time he posted :p

But i dont think there would be an advantage in converting the dvi to agp

Tired yes, stoned no, lol. Oddly enough, I dont drink or do drugs :p

I was referring to VGA. I had seen cards with both VGA and DVI outputs, but instead of plugging directly into the VGA, they had used a DVI to VGA adapter and plugged into that.

the only advantage is if you have a device that you just really want to plug into the regular VGA, or if you have a plug that isnt long enough to reach, you gain an extra half-inch of rigid length :p. the DVI port, and the VGA adapter for it are only to please everyone.

The only advantage is that you can plug a VGA device into a DVI port, backcompatability basically.

There are also some cards where the DVI is set to the primary display and the D-SUB connector to the secondary, and they don't autoswitch in DOS - so you're stuck with a blank screen until Windows loads. Annoying, huh - I've seen people return graphics cards for less.
