I was bored the other day, and decided to check out what mods are on offer for HL2. The answer was? Not many. Thankfully, one of the ones that is on offer rocks my socks and your...I dunno, something that rhymes with socks(suggestions on a postcard). The site is here, it goes down a lot thanks to a hacker, but works mostly. The game is hard to decribe. It's cyberpunk, two teams, timed respawn. One team(the corps) defend, the other team(the punks) attack. There are a series of objectives that the corps have to stop the punks achieving, set throughout fairly large maps. All sounds fairly normal so far I guess. The twist is though, that this game features "hacking". Players of the light or medium class can pick an implant called the cyberdeck, which allows them to hack in at "jack in points"(JIP's). Once in, the player gets transported to a cyberspace game area, where they have to hack things like turrets, doors and spawns, for their teammates back in the real world(meatspace). It might all sound very complicated, and in a way it is. I've been playing for a week or so and I'm still learning, but it's easy enough to get going and have fun just being a bog standard solider type, and firing your gun at the enemy. Once you get better and start to learn though, the game just opens right up. Anyway, I'm done pimping this. It's still in the "demo" stage, which means there are only about 4 maps, but they are big maps, so keep you entertained for a good long while, but it's hitting Version 1(proper full release) sometime soon hopefully. Go download it, give it a go for a while, and enjoy edit: Some screens from in game: http://www.zen85473.zen.co.uk/dys_cyberspace2.jpg http://www.zen85473.zen.co.uk/dys_iceworld0053_003.jpg http://www.zen85473.zen.co.uk/dys_punks_move_out.jpg http://www.zen85473.zen.co.uk/dys_vaccine0083.jpg http://www.zen85473.zen.co.uk/water_27530.jpg
A mate played this a while ago and told me it was pretty bad*, but from what you've said it seems to have improved a lot. I'll have to check it out * This is the free one, right? If not, I'm thinking of something else.
Yus, free so long as it's not standalone is what the devs have said. Not sure if that means they'd lisence it and sell it with the HL2 engine, or get an entirely new engine platform.
it's a mod so as long as you have a copy of hl2 it should be fine. It's alot of fun as you can battle in cyber space . Another mod for HL2 that i feel is well done is called Minerva. It's a single player mod that is VERY well done unfortunately there are only 2 levels done so far but if it keeps up i would imagine valve might suck him up into thier team . http://www.hylobatidae.org/minerva/ download and enjoy
Dystopia is a reasonable mod, lots of actual mods to the engine. If you get a good team, it rocks (incedentally camo + monofilament sword = insta multikill ) One to keep an eye out for is Neotokyo, in a similar vein (near-post-apocalyptic-future-type-thing). It started life as a UT2k4 mod, you can currently play it but the community is minute, doesnt stop us playing though - http://rto.poddle.net/neotokyo.html http://www.neotokyohq.com/ for the official website and details of the HL2 conversion.
I've been playing Dystopia for about 6 months now and it's absolutly brilliant. I would recommend anyone to try it. it takes a bit of work to get into but you do it's brilliant. It's best to find servers with about 10-20 people on them. Any more or less than that and the game doesn't flow as well. Give it a go.
Yea, i used to play Dystopia, it's an amazingly good game, fantastically skilled. Great community as well, really nice and friendly. It's a pity this isn't getting much support.
Support? It's getting built into V1 asap. Currently the game is in a playable demo form, so the maps are limited and certain aspects of the gameplay aren't as fleshed out as they will be in the longrun ,but it's getting there, and certainly, if not something to play now(although I think even now is worth it), something to keep an eye on for the future.
Looks like they took alot of inspiration for the armour from the final fantasy movie, looks really cool, downloading it now to give it a spin. I also did see Minerva on there and i was really impressed with the screens, will check that out too. Also gonna try out sourceforts, looks like alot of fun. EDIT: Played it last night and it kind of reminds me of Planetside, pretty good fun but it's a shame theres so few people on there. Not quite sure what to make of this yet.
