And the blocking of Ceta doesn't bode well for any trade deal we may come up with, although wasn't the length of time it takes the EU to negotiate trade deals one of the reasons for leaving.

Basically, which has been the argument made all along and which has been dismissed by the Brexiteers all along.

Now a cautious politician might want to start sorting out Britain's WTO tariff schedules now so that it has a fall-back position if it tumbles into WTO trading status with the EU. Especially as these schedules need to be unanimously ratified by 161 countries (including the EU-27) and that may take a while in itself. But the Brexiteers aren't, because they are "confident" that it won't get that far.

I have checked that my qualifications are recognised in Ireland (they are. Turns out pay is better too). They are also recognised in the Netherlands and Germany, both languages in which I am fluent enough to work. So even if the Brexiteers don't, I have my plan B.

I think how the EU is going to resolve the CETA deal will give us an insight into how they will deal with the UK. It looks like an emergency meeting in Brussels may have already resolved the impasse and that CETA is on again for signing next week. When the EU wants it badly enough, it can make it happen. So I have no doubt that the UK and the EU could work out a reasonable deal. But if the UK keeps pissing the EU off, that goodwill may not apply in Brexit.

By resolved - overruled the Belgians?

As for `pissing the EU off` the rhetoric is strong on both sides, look at the link above with, potentially, French being the language of choice.

Addressed their concerns. Veto's cannot be ignored (logically).

I think that is the media creating drama (because drama sells papers). Barnier has already said that he has negotiated in the past in English and French and has no preference, and that it is up to the negotiators to decide. Both of which have ample staff who are fluent in both languages. It's a non-problem.

But seeing as it is the UK which decided to leave, and wants to be seen by the world as an outward-facing, friendly and stable nation to do business with, doesn't it behoove the UK to set the emotional tone of Brexit? Farage's little psychodrama on The Day After didn't help. Neither did the tone of the Tory conference.

Be wise when others are wise; be wise when others are unwise; thus wisdom is retained.
Be kind when others are kind, be kind when others are unkind; thus kindness is retained.
Be honest when others are honest, be honest when others are dishonest; thus honesty is retained.

Ah, well. If only Scotland and N. Ireland had as much power in the UK as Wallonia has in Belgium...

In the referendum that is true.

But in general? No, just London bias from Londoners and the rest of the country can go f*** itself.

Wouldn't have made any sense for them to vote leave as they have a massive financial market that is going to suffer a lot depending on how brexit is implemented (and there where zero specifics provided pre referendum).
Just like it wouldn't have made any sense for NI and Scotland to vote leave because they need the hundreds of millions in EU subsidies.
