NE huh? You have my deepest sympathies. The closest I ever lived was Hull. I had an opportunity to go for a really good consultant's post in Middlesbrough. It was a really good job. But it was in Middlesbrough.

    An exciting opportunity
    Colleagues warm and welcoming
    The office sunny and spacious
    But it's in Middlesbrough.

    The work is rewarding
    The patients deserving of help
and the hospital clean and resourced
    But it's in Middlesbrough.

    The job is well-paid
    A solid career move.
    But it's in Middlesbrough,
    it's in Middlesbrough,
    it's in Middlesbrough.

What can I say? Just driving through places like Redcar and Loftus made me want to lock the car doors, turn South and not ease below 80mph until I hit the outskirts of Birmingham.

Perhaps I should ask Holyrood to challenge for control, we're closer to Edinburgh afterall.

Even the locals feel that way about Teeside. Hell I considered applying to Teeside Uni and had the exact same train of thought as you did: '...but it's Middlesbrough though'.

But I am on about even further north than that. the land that gave you Greggs and Ant and Dec...

    ...sorry about that.

Tyneside is a little better but it's still quite isolated... to the north [Northumberland], west [Cumbria] and south [Co Durham] are all pretty much empty and to the east it's the sea.

If you'd kept driving further to Northumberland you would hit some of the nicest areas in the country.

Apologies for harping on about it but something just occurred to me, we've basically pledge an extra £4 billion investment in Africa and from what i can tell that's resulted in a promise to copy and paste an existing EU trade deal.

If we've sunk to celebrating the handing over of cash so we can keep existing agreements that doesn't bode well for future deals.

Expect to see a lot of such 'Brexit dividends': paying more money for things to stay the same as, or turn slightly worse than when the UK was in the EU, and calling it a great triumph.

I thought I read that the 4bn was going to be paid over the course of several years, though when I went back to look for this I couldn't find it, so god knows where I read it. It does make thing slightly better if I'm right. I suspect if we end up replicating the EU deals and paying extortionate amounts of money to each party to do so, I'd imagine most brexiters would probably be ok with this. We'll be the land of chavs and no money, but at least no foreigners will be coming over here picking out fruit thus stealing our jobs.

Barnier a bit ambiguous with the talk of a partnership between the UK and EU "such as there never has been with any other third country".

I'd like to be hopeful though as everytime a Brexiteer opens their mouth about future trade deals their fundamental ignorance about how our current trade deals/future trade deals/WTO trading works scares the bejeesus out of me.

It's what he has been saying for two years --with the usual caveat about respect for mutual red lines. Just the usual diplomacy to ensure that the EU comes out looking blameless if talks break down and to make a no-deal harder to sell to the UK electorate by the Brexiteers.
