Plus aside from a couple of high profile names [Lehman and Northern Rock], they all more or less escaped consequence free from the ***********. 'Too big to fail' and all that.

So they probably think they can do so again.

Soon-to-be-former Brexit Sec Barclay speaks some vague sense... That if May/HMG do go back to the EU and say 'we want more' the EU will almost certainly say 'we also want more'.

In short, the ERGers [and Labour] should be careful what they wish for on the 'let's renegotiate' front.

If history is anything to go by:
    https://novaramedia.com/2018/05/30/...t-really-care-about-abused-kids-or-terrorism/

Some of them do seem to be under the delusion that if May loses the vote on the deal then the EU will stop drop and roll, make a bunch of concessions for the sake of saving the May government as that would be easier than starting over with a Corbyn government.

Of course the DUP has pledged to do everything it can to bring down the government if the deal passes as it violates their blood red lines...

Corbyn finally says he wants 'remain' as an option if there is another vote.

See, look behind the sofa long enough and you may find a spine.

Latest poll results from 4-7 December: when BMG asked some 1,500 respondents, “should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union, or leave the European Union”, 52 per cent said “remain”, 40 per cent said “leave”, six per cent said they did not know and one per cent refused to say.

Also people were against no deal by 44 per cent to 37 per cent, for a new referendum by 46 per cent to 30 per cent and for Norway by 41 per cent to 39 per cent.

More than 2,000 people in Northern Ireland were asked whether they would vote to join a united Ireland or to stay in the UK "in the context of a hard Brexit... leaving the EU with no deal on the border, the Good Friday Agreement or citizens' rights".

The results showed 47.9 per cent of people would support joining the Republic of Ireland in the event of a hard Brexit while 45.4 per cent would rather stay in the UK. Another 6 per cent said they were "undecided" but would definitely vote, while fewer than 1 per cent said they would not vote or spoil their ballot.

And Scotland looks like thinking of bailing. Awkward...

    We want our country back!

    ...what's left of it.

Though when they say it, we all know that, to them, 'our country' = [the home counties of] England.

EU court has just ruled that the UK can unilaterally cancel Brexit.

It won't, of course, but it does make crashing out into a no-deal more of a political choice than an accidental outcome. Let's see which politicians are prepared to take ownership of the consequences.

Just thinking about it, did anyone else notice that would allow a future UK government to withdraw the article 50 notice, instantly rejoin and immediately put in another article 50 to restart negotiation from scratch! All sorts of unintended consequences, no doubt.

I suspect there might be some terms and conditions to rescinding A50 that aren't detailed here.

I'm guessing there maybe something in the full legal text, we've only had the preliminary notice so far, or that changes will be made to A50 in the future.

What you describe can't happen though as the EU has taken away member states sovereignty and it's an undemocratic supranational organisation so they'd never allow something like that. ;)

EDIT: Having just read the full ruling it seems the safe guard against what you describe is the constitutional requirements of the Member State concerned, that's to say it would need to be voted through parliament, if a member state wanted to play a game of hokey pokey it would require a majority of MPs wanting to play silly buggers.

Funnily enough the main reason they gave for a member state being able to revoke A50 without asking permission from the EU is that because member states are sovereign and can not be forced to agree to a demand from the EU against its will then the same principal applies when it comes to revoking the intention to withdraw.

That argument was made by the EU attorney. However I suspect that in this particular case the EU would simply invoke Article 7.
