Michael Gove: "The parliamentary vote will definitely go ahead"

Official government spokesman 30 mins later: "The vote has been called off"

AFAIK it's the 'nuclear option' - deals with sanctions and expulsions.

It's a mess in itself though, it was activated against Poland and Hungary over a year ago but they'll just veto any decision made against the other.

Yea i had a quick look, from what i understand it doesn't deal with expulsions as a member state can't be forced to agree to a demand from the EU against its will, at most it deals with sanctions and revocation of voting rights.

I see, not so much an expulsion but a cold shoulder and no invites to birthday parties then.

Yea, although i guess losing voting rights could really hurt as you'd be in a similar situation as we'll be in with Mrs May's deal.

Having said that though I'm not sure how the EU squares losing your voting rights with the not forcing a member state to do something against its will bit, doesn't losing voting rights mean you could be forced to do something you don't want to or do you just refuse to follow the rules.

Looks like there has to be a vote to delay the vote, which incidently May looks like losing so there may be a vote after all.

Considering she seems to be a fan of votes, votes about votes, having votes if the first vote isn't beaten to badly it's a surprise she's against the People's Vote.

Mind you that would be asking a different question, perhaps she only like votes that ask the exact same thing.

Did anyone else hear Shami Chakrabarti's effort at not explaining Labour's policy on a 2nd Referendum and/or Brexit on Today this morning?

I think the general Labour standpoint is agree with whatever may get them into power. That leaves them basically not saying much. To be fair, compared to the other side that makes them look like contemplative philosophers.

    Carry On Brexit: Part Deux

Oooh Speaker having a word about the late halt to the debate.

Edit: Procedure being enforced. It sounded important but i'm not sure what the Speaker was saying.

I think this is basically the speaker saying "Listen, that's just not cricket - stop buggering around and let's do things right."

Not sure what the update was on that particular point - don't have time to read the full live blog, have to go feed my cats and cut my hair

From what i understand Bercow has basically said parliament can, if they wish, propose to vote of whether to force the vote or wait until the end of January when previously passed statute would force the vote.

She's basically trying to kick the can down the road because she knows her withdrawal agreement would be voted down but if MPs wanted they could vote for when the vote should happen. :)

And it might be enough to save her job until then:

That is unless the ERG figures out how to write 48 letters.

Do you think she's hoping MPs will have a nice Christmas and new year and they'll be in a better mood.

I've just read that the European court declared that the UK could stop the Brexit process and stay in the EU. Is there any chance that the Gov will make a 2nd referendum?
