    If only I'd known.
I threw out a half mouldy turnip yesterday. Was sitting on a gold mine there and never knew.

Was going to grow spuds in the garden this year. Better buy some turnip seeds, before the price goes through the roof. Do you think it might be worth buying hundreds of packs of seeds and selling them at 4 times the price on eBay?

You can mine them too. All you need is a few acres of land and some hella-expensive farming hardware and, within few months, you'll have enough to trade for a jumbo bag of dried pasta and a couple of pounds of tomatoes.

Be quick though, the scalpers are buying up all the farm equipment and John Deere is already upping production for direct sale to the farm-mining um.. farms.

Naah, UK just caught up. Food inflation in UK and EU are now an equal 19.2% (March 2023 figures).

This would be the same Torygraph that had back to back articles summarised as the following -

How dare lefty lawyers try and circumvent uk immigration laws!
Here's how you can get around French immigration laws and stay in your holiday home.

We're still being sheltered from the effects of Brexit until the end of this year.

Around 1/3rd of the income into the VCSE sector is still from the EU, with the majority coming from the ESF (European social fund).

The first tranche of that runs out at the end of September with the rest then tailoring off until all EU support funds are withdrawn from the UK by 31st December 2023.

You might think funding for voluntary, community or social enterprise organisations isn't a big deal, but the public sector and in particular the NHS, DWP and social services have become increasing dependent on them due to the cuts over the last 15 years.

Public services, non-profits, and those most in need are about to get hit really blood hard by Brexit.

    Posted without comment:

Dawson et al, Cognitive ability and voting behaviour in the 2016 UK referendum on European Union membership, PLOS One, 2023.

"We find that a one standard deviation increase in cognitive ability, all else being equal, increases the likelihood of a Remain vote by 9.7%. Similarly, we find that an increase in partner’s cognitive ability further increases the respondent’s likelihood of a Remain vote (7.6%). In a final test, restricting our analysis to couples who voted in a conflicting manner, we find that having a cognitive ability advantage over one’s partner increases the likelihood of voting Remain (10.9%).

"The idea that cognitive ability mattered for the referendum is consistent with the literature on cognitive ability and vulnerability to (mis/dis) information. It is suggestive that erroneous reporting surrounding the referendum might have complicated personal decision making, especially for those with low cognitive ability. It is also possible that those with lower levels of cognitive ability—rather than just lower levels of education—are more receptive to divisive ideas, or that that those lower in cognitive ability had less knowledge about the referendum which tends to predict anti-establishment voting."

On the face of it, those increases seem significant, but percentages are oft misrepresented in studies, depending on the political or philosophical bent of the author.

Maybe I'm just **** at navigating websites on my phone but when trying the link in the article, to read the underlying data, I got trapped in a circle-jerk of self referencing links to the same abstract.

On the UK Data Service site, y'mean? It links to 6614, though it's now Waves 1-13 rather than Waves 1-12 as when the paper was written. You'll need an account, and the data are marked as safeguarded - which may put additional hoops in the way of direct access.

    Stoopid's gonna stoopid.

Speaking of which the Dutch have given the anti-islam, anti-EU, Trump and Oban fan Geert Wilders the opportunity to become PM.

Whether he can get a coalition together remains to be seen.
