Just sucks the Q6600 is on 1066Mhz still, it's really putting me off making the final decision to order one :(

Why? It's only easier to overclock, doesn't even require 800MHz RAM.

Means it's slower to access the RAM

I just saw new price on overclockers and so attempted to get one but can I justify getting rid of my e6300.

I only planned to get a new motherboard this month and maybe a case as I liked the antec 182 for ages but then there’s a price cut on the cpu.

I just can’t decide, seems too many advantages or disadvantages and my friends normally are helpful in these times but there are stuck as me

Well i gave in and orded from scan

Why give them your money when Scan is the same price and have stock and you may get free delivery :)

Can somebody explain to me what the G0 stepping is (or stepping in general i guess) and what difference it makes in the real world?
After reading this, I'm thinking of getting the Q6600, with a Noctua NH-U12F, and Asus P5B Motherboard and a Gigabyte Poiesiden case.

Would i be able to overclock it to 3Ghz with this (and is that likely to shorten the lifespan of my components to under 3-4 years)? Do I need to worry about what RAM I buy? And finally, if i do overclock it to 3Ghz, will i be getting teh same results as the 3Ghz E6850 in games etc?

The G0 stepping makes the processor more efficient with the result the power requirements are reduced from from 105 to 95 Watts. Not a lot, but this might give you more headroom for clocking but a lot depends on the heatsink you use.

Maybe I should have said the G0 stepping is a hardware design and manufacturing improvement leading to a more efficient processor - so intel have been able to reduce the TDP from 105 to 95 Watts. So gives off less heat.

Just a quick update on the temps as promised.

After 3 hours of general use I get cpu temps of 33 degrees C, under a freezer 7 pro, which is not expensive and IS quiet, this is running at stock.

Does anyone know how to ID the Q6600 with the new stepping from the old one? I would bet its in the serial number or model number but I haven't been able to find any info on it.

Well I think you already decided but Quad-core because after about a 6600 (dual core) the CPU doesn't really matter too much anymore unless you have a 30in dell and dual 8800GTX's and even then it won't make a whole lot of difference if you oc to 3.0ghz

I'm answering my own question in case someone else wants to know.

    B3 stepping ends in SL9UM
    G0 stepping ends in SLACR

It will be on a sticker on the outside of the box.

Yeah in the thread in the scan section they say they get their q6600s from a few suppliers and that some will have g0 but some won't, might be an idea to get in touch with their customer services to see if they can check the box for you before sending.

if you aren't in a rush to get one right away you could wait a month or so and wait for everyone else to buy up the old steppings.
