Recently there's been a razia at a Belgian LAN-party. 13 PC's have been confiscated, lots of illegal material found (duh) and obviously many fines were given. This got me thinking, what is the easiest way to kill your hard-drive, as fast as possible, as clean as possible, and prefferably so that you can still use it. So basically just how to render the data unreadable without special equipment. I'm sure our police department doesn't want to spend thousands of euros on a hard-disk that they think contains some illegal material. I can imagine that prior to a razzia the police will ask to cut off the power so that no one can erase their files, so it shouldn't be software-based. One popular idea is of course to use a huge magnet, but are there details available on this? Like, do you have to open your case to get really close to the hard drives or is it ok if there's about 10-20cm space between it? Is your hard-drive still usable afterwards? Any other methods, links, ideas, and comments are welcome.
Use a program like Drivecrypt that will encrypt your entire hd, you can set a password for boot so it wont go past the bios till the p\w is entered, it then needs two p\ws to unencrypt the hd's and load windows, supports better encryption than the DoD, FBI etc... Death
I once read an article somewhere, and in it they used 5 1/4 bay filled with thermite (surprisingly easy to make....so I've heard) You just flip the switches, it ignites electrically, and burns a neat hole through your HDD. Proper Job!
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda that zeroes your hdd, so without spending thousands of dollars for data recovery, there's no data, the downside is, it takes a while
hahaha nice bindi or proper powerfull magnet, then axe then thing into as many pieces as properly. wont be able to recover off of that. 0'killing doesnt work, even if you do it many times. you can still recover data. with cheap/free software that is too

why not just have a 40 gig hd that you use for lans which has everything legal on it that you need, and your normal hd which you stick in at home?
I though the whole point of lans was to be a front for drinking and sharing illegal data? You have to take your collection of HDDs, same as you have to take a bottle opener and some patch leads.
Lmao Hows about get a removable caddy, a stealthing mechanism that drops a plate down from bay above caddy, and a pair of large boots. Siren -> Rip out caddy -> Thing drops down (so police arnt like mmm a big hole ) -> shove caddy down boot. You may also want to bring crutches so it aint too obvious u have a 5.25" box shoved down ur boot whilst limping away.
use an external drive? you could burn it all on to dvd's or you could have a hdd removable caddy thing, and a chunky iron bar with about 40000 coils wrapped round next to a car battery
I've heard microwave-ing a disk will wipe it clean, which sounds plauseable (hmmm, where's that old 1.5Gb disk???). The best way is pull it apart and poor paintstripper on the platyters (ouch ), then maybe dremmel them a bit (oooohhh), then bung 'em in an incinerator (eek !). Or just don't get caught...
