Couple of years ago, I'd have been pleased to see that. These days, EDGE have let their standards slip something rotten and I don't think they're any better than any other magazine or website, reviews-wise... in fact they're often worse, as they've become so unbearably self-righteous I rarely buy it any more. Having said that, the Metacritic scores look very good for this game indeed - 2nd top in the PS3 chart after GTA.
agreement. but they're still not bad. it started going downhill after all the staff left over that 'marketing violent games to kids' thing.
just cancelled my sub after i got this issue. i just don't really read them anymore, just flick through and check out the reviews, and there was enough of them this time!
Eurogamer and Games Radar for me. To be honest, when they started selling their souls to the big companies for exclusive PS3 issues and all that bollocks, I started to get a bitter taste in my mouth. They just started to majorly compromise their position. Some of the end of year awards are sickenly fawning towards Nintendo too. Also too many reviews marked down, almost on purpose. Used to be a great magazine when first started buying it, around the time I had my N64 and up until the end of the Dreamcast era. Started to slide after that. Back on topic though, LBP is gonna be my first PS3 game purchase since Battlefield Bad Company. I hope it doesn't rely too much on a busy friends list, as mine is virtually empty.
I've all but given up on printed media for technology reviews and the such. I still think it's a decent medium, especially for film and art. Otherwise, I just stick with the likes of Metacritic. Regardless, I definitely will be getting a PS3 at some point for LBP and a shiny Blu-Ray player. That's all though really.
8/10 for MGS seems almost generous to me. It was barely a game in places - value for money was appalling.
I am loving EVERY minute of Disagea 3 man hehe. I am a Nippon Ichi fiend I tell you. I have just about every game they have put out over here in North America save for the Disgaea re-releases for DS/PSP.
TBH what difference does it make? It's incredibly difficult to put an opinion of a game into numerical form, and it's still just an opinion. Spore had some good scores but I didn't enjoy it all that much.
I use Joe for my games reviews these days. World of Goo is easily a 9/10 since it is by far the best casual game I've played -- up there with Braid. Dead space and Fable 2 are next on my list to play.
They only gave World Of Goo an 8? Ok, it has the re-playability of orange peel but the first time through it is a truly wondrous experience.
I go for gamespot reviews even if they are slightly biased the video reviews help alot. I was going to get a PS3 then went off the idea though now I feel I want one again, I guess its time for me to get a part time job! Christmas present to myself maybe?
Biased, but I do kind of agree. On the whole their reviews are very good and the actual writing is great, but for big games like LBP they often seem to give into hype. It happens to us all, of course, but it's reliable with them it seems. What bothers me is that I've seen them give rather negative reviews and do nothing but slate a game off, then give it a really good score at the end. I think they did that with Halo 3 IIRC. Personally, I trust reviews by writers not publications. Ellie Gibson at Eurogamer knows what she's talking about, as does Luke Gutteridge at Play.TM. Kieron Gillen and Alec Meer are still the reviewers whose opinion I value most, so I read a lot of RockPaperShotgun, Eurogamer and The Escapist.
People read too much into the number. The Edge review could be well written with a lot of careful criticisms but you've just quoted me the 10. And a 10 isn't uniform across the industry either - an Edge 10 is not a PS Magazine 10. What bothers me is that people skip to the end and read the conclusion and not the numbers - or they read the review, agree/disagree with it, then go off on a ****-storm because it was given a number they don't agree with. It's a review of personal taste - you can not attribute a value to that unlike a hardware review. Read the criticisms and comments, likes and dislikes and if you agree wit the reviewer then buy it. If not, don't. Like Joe says - follow PEOPLE not Publications.
