Windows Edge session manager extension - suggestions requested!

Morning all!

Nearly warmer weather, which is good because the boiler has just packed up. Just a quick query this time - for better or worse, I currently use my browser as my to-do list, which means I have a ridiculous amount of tabs and windows open (yeah, yeah, I know...).

Obviously, every time the browser or PC crashed I would lose all this, so started using an extension called Tab Session Manager to save the session and restore it. However, that's now becoming a bit flaky itself and this morning has lost all the backup sessions. They're still in the folder where it saves them, but the extension itself can't read its own saved data and doesn't show them as options.

So I'm after two bits of info if possible:

• a way to get these json files either back into Tab Session Manager or otherwise read/restored
• suggestions for alternatives that anyone has experience with

A search on the Edge "store" (or whatever it's called) has thrown up a whole stack of possible alternatives, but I'd rather go with one that others have tried and trust.

Any advance on this, chaps? I've found something called Workona but I can't decide on it yet - it doesn't seem to save sessions at intervals, just the current session and update it, which might actually be fine but I've left the flaky TSM running at the same time just in case. I could really do with getting the old sessions back into TSM, so would appreciate any advice on that front if possible.

I've then also discovered a whole slew of other session managers (most of which are called some variation on "Tab Manager") but I don't want to install everything just to play around with them and don't want to waste too much time on it, so personal insight would be good.

Workona only seems to save live sessions so having crashed the browser, it is only saving what Tab Session Manager brought back up, which is not all my stuff. I really need to find a way to either get my saved TSM json files back into TSM, or otherwise to get them into some form of reader (Notepad, Excel, XML, web page, whatever the Hell - I don't really care at this stage) so that I can remove dupes from previous sessions and just reload the addresses manually. Would be better if I could edit the json session files or load all de-duped tabs back in, but I'm assuming that's wishful thinking.

If any of the above extensions do what I'm after, I'd be grateful for any pointers as I'm losing the fkg will.

I'm not sure many people on here use Edge as their daily driver (not that there is anything wrong with it). Add that to the issue hinging on using tabs the way you do (a lot of people would probably say "don't") and I think it's a very small group of people that might be able to offer up the sort of answer you're after without coming at the problem with a blank slate.

 

Ah, cheers for response bud. I was actually hoping those with Chrome or Brave might be able to chip in as well, as I think they're all Chromium-based and the extensions are mostly similar. Or even the Game Pass crowd! I did also think json files were fairly ubiquitous (but do correct me if I'm wrong) so thought that might be an angle I could try.

What does everyone use these days then? And is anything else stable enough for my use case (which as you quite rightly point out, is not ideal and most would indeed counsel against! I am working on the habit...I did start using Edge collections for a bit )?

I'd probably use the built in tools for stability. Cloud sync, then use collections for manual incremental backups.
-Sync should allow you to restore currently open tabs anywhere.
-Left clicking the top right icon in Edge shows "add all tabs to collection". Each time this gives you an individual dated collection that you can restore.
-Then you can backup "%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Collections" to restore collections separately from any cloud storage

The only issue seems to be that this all works nicely with multiple tabs, but not with multiple windows...

 

if its the same-ish as tab session manager for FF (it looks like they share the same codebase), then you can go to its settings and in Sessions Tab there is an option to import json.
As a fellow tab hoarder, I'm sticking to FF (with TSM) and snapshoting whole browser profile hourly in case of corruption.
