I don't know the Nvidia graphics driver, so bear with my vagueness :miffed:

Check your grpahics config file (XF86Config I believe) and make sure that the settings for your monitors are correct, as it's found them (good) ut the settings (liek teh refresh rates, etc) are incorrect.

If those are correct, then . . Uhh . . Sorry, don't really know :grr: :sigh:

    thats exactly what i thought
one monitor has the rates 30-64 and 50-120, and the other, 30-48 and 50-60
ive siwtched those values around from 1st screen to 2nd and back again and i still got the same error, so i figure that i have to get rid of this display device mapping error first before it will work with the screens?

Those are the values in the config file, or what the manual(s) say ?

Also, is this on a single card (ie dual head) or a AGP +PCI card combo ? I have both, an AGP card, and a dual head PCI, and I cna set the refresh rates independandly of the monitor connected to the AGP card, and the ones connected to teh PCI card, but I find that it REALLY hates it when the two refresh rates of teh monitors on teh PCI card are different, so I jsut keep them the same. Maybe keep them the same, so having to run the better one at the lower rates then.

Just my two ickle tickle little cents.

I get that error if I try to use the nvidia drivers on a recompiled kernel. They work just fine on the original kernel though

I have yet to get the bloody nvidia drivers to work on my recompiled kernel. Makes me wish I could write my own! :D

oh yeah, and I'm only running one display. :sigh:

For ATI, the multi display is built in to the drivers, and is selected through a control panel supplied withteh drivers.

I would imagine a similar thing is done with Nvidia.

Also there is no option fo rmulti display on/off as far as I know. (and I should, I've ripped more kernels apart than I have compiled :naughty: )

does the release have generic nvidia drivers built in when you first install? Do those work alright? Do they give you dual?

I run dual in windows sometimes, but that's w/ an extra pci card. I've no clue how to get both to work at the same time in linux :D

do u have a link for nvidia panel?

there arent any that support my card with slack8.1...i have to download NVIDIA_kernel-2.4.19 and NVIDIA_GLX-2.4.19 and install those...they have this "TwinView" built into them thats specifically for but i cant get past that error :/

    Im afraid I don't know what Nvidia panel is . . . .

I was just refering to the fact the drivers should have something like that . . .

Also TwinView is wha tyour looking for, that will give you your multi monitor support and management.

If I rememeber correctly, it should be something similar to XPs built in multi monitor support, a la Linux style of course ;)

You ARE compiling teh KERNEL source first, then instaling the GLX extensions right ? Also check the readme for if you maybe have to alter you kernel, and since your using Slackware, does teh Nvidia drivers work on Slackware ? And you did downlaod the drivers for the rigth architecture right ?

    Wai-ne'su !

When I finally got the drivers to work, I used the src.rpm for the kernel.
I could never get the specific kernels to work for me.

my install went fine, first with the kernel, followed by the glx, slackware8.1's kernel only supports upto the geforce3 ti and maybe the geforce4 mx series but not my particular card, ti4200 (geforce4), i know that what i need to use is twinview, the only problem im having is that error comes up when i setup the twinview commands in the /etc/x11/xf86config file
this is what i added into that file:

    Option "TwinView"
    Option "SecondMonitorHorizSync" "30-48"
    Option "SecondMonitorVertRefresh" "50-60"
    Option "MetaModes" "1024x768"
    Option "TwinViewOrientation" "Above"
    Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT, DFP"

here, i have changed the 2nd monitor's horizsync and vertrefresh down to the specifications of my other monitor, as someone had told me to try...

again, just to make it clear here that TwinView is an XF86Config extention which is activated by the first line as posted above^, not an actual gui interface configuration device...although one of those for my cards would be very cool, is there one?

    problem solved

and you =wouldnt believe what did it either
    the like
    Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT, DFP"
i had edited to just crt, did nothing, then i tried dfp, that got rid of the error, but no screens found, so i removed the line alltogether, and it worked :D

its awesome, now im just wondering if anyone knows how to setup:
    quake3
    counterstrike
    tribes2
to make the crosshair on screen1, and lets say the monitor to the right of screen one displays the right peripheral vision...ive seen 3 monitor setups where this is used, but is it possible to have this but remove the monitor on the immidiate left?
if not, then how do i get it just on one screen instead of everything i open centering itself on both :eyebrow: :grr:

quake3 i have no issues with single monitor setup, but i cant find anything on google for cs or tribes2 :waah:

    thanks -

this is by far one of the most useful threads I've read so far. I was having exactly the same problem for a while, couldn't solve it, and removing the "CRT,DFP" line cleaned up the problem for me too.
    cool!
