but in all seriousness, there are a few programs that convert songs from the itunes music store into more usable, unlocked formats like mp3.

To de-authorize all the computers at once:

access your iTunes online account (Click on your email address in the right hand corner of your iTunes browser, and enter your password, it should take you to your account. Then on the screen somewhere, it will say "Deauthorize all Computers". Click on it, and bang all fixed. BTW, you can only do that after you've authorized 5 computers.

    Yep.

BTW, you can deauthorise indvidual machines by opening iTunes on the machine in question and selecting Deauthorise Computer from the advanced menu.

You have 5 'licenses' for want of a better word in a pool; everytime you authorise a machine, you have one less license, and everytime you deauthorise, you get one back, upto a max of 5.

Yes, if you want higher quality but bigger file sizes. I usually use 128 or 192, but my ears are fprobably full of wax or something - There's no way I can tell between, say, 192 and 256 kbps. Anyway, use MP3s ffs.

I made the mistake of re-encoding my entire library to 128k AAC. Damn what a mistake that was.. 128k AAC is absolutly dire, 192k is ok though.

Doesn't really matter what codec you use anyway, mp3's are more multi-platform, AAC is really Mac only, unless you've got iTunes/Quicktime installed on your PC.

Yeah, I've had enough of single-platform shizzle, so it's MP3 all the way for me. Because I've only got a small-capacity MP3 player, I go 128 usually.

You can convert to MP3 if you want to, just select your whole library, then right click > Convert Selection to MP3. But beware, it'll take a LONG time. Well, it too over 24 hours to convert 2450 songs to 128k AAC, which looking back, was a big mistake.

iTunes doesn't delete the old files afterwards though, but stupidly I manually deleted them after converting, and now I wished I hadn't.

Now I have to rip all 179 cd's (plus the three I bought today).. Great.

No, that would be those things that you hit "don't show this warning again" will be shown again. Like "dude, if you click this, we charge your card!!111" type ones. I'd imagine it'll show up next to authorizations after you hit five, as was mentioned earlier.

In any case, it doesn't really matter. Though I don't use iTMS except for podcasts, my understanding is that the files will only play on computers authorized to that account. So even if you've used four auths but only use one comp, you're fine.

Or just transcode to a format that's not all DRM-ey. I'd imagine you'd have to use something questionable to lose the DRM though
